"Your Shoe's Untied" is the first episode of Season Two of SpongeBob SquarePants.

Brief summary: SpongeBob forgets how to tie his shoes.

Plot

Patrick arrives at SpongeBob's house to show him his new pair of shoes. SpongeBob asks Patrick to put them on, but Patrick confesses that he doesn't know how to tie his shoes. SpongeBob offers to show him how using his own shoes, claiming to be a master of shoe tying, but finds that he has forgotten how to tie his shoes. Upon realizing this, SpongeBob convinces Patrick to leave, and remembers that his shoes had been tied since he was an egg and had never come undone until now. He tells himself that he'll remember after a good night's sleep, but the next morning still cannot tie his shoes. He still says that he'll remember sooner or later, and begins to go to work. However, he cannot avoid tripping over his untied laces, and falls over with every step he takes.

When SpongeBob finally reaches the Krusty Krab, and sees Patrick eating there, wearing his shoes on his hands. To avoid admitting to him that he can't tie his shoes, he breaks through the floorboards and puts his feet through them, which Patrick does not notice. In the kitchen, he is unable to walk across the room to give Squidward the food, and thus cannot provide service, driving all the customers away. When Mr. Krabs realizes this and confronts SpongeBob, he explains his predicament, and asks Mr. Krabs to teach him how to tie his shoes, but Mr. Krabs says that he doesn't wear shoes. SpongeBob begins asking other people, including an eel, Jellyfish, a giant cave monster and even the pirate painting from the opening sequence, but none of them wear shoes and thus do not know how to tie them. Eventually, SpongeBob screams out "DOESN'T ANYBODY KNOW HOW TO TIE A KNOT?!" in frustration, and the Flying Dutchman appears, telling him that he has been the winner of the "Fancy Knot Tying Contest" for the last 3,000 years and demonstrating his prowess in tying a variety of complex knots. SpongeBob tells the Dutchman that he only needs to know how to tie his shoes, but the Dutchman informs him that even he doesn't know how to tie his shoes, as he hasn't worn shoes for over 5,000 years, as he disappears, laughing maniacally.

A depressed SpongeBob drags himself home, where Gary repeatedly tries to talk to him, but SpongeBob tells him to leave him alone. However, Gary roars at SpongeBob to get his attention, and ties his shoe for him, revealing that he wears shoes under his slimy underside. He flips open his shell to reveal a record player, which plays "Loop de Loop", a song about tying shoes, as the episode ends.

Patrick's new shoes resemble Converse All-Stars.

Trivia/Goofs

  • When SpongeBob arrives at his home near the end of the episode, the lights are off. However, after Gary ties his shoe, they are on.
  • When Spongebob goes around trying to find someone that can teach him how to tie his shoes, he is able to travel around with his shoes untied.
  • Patrick's shoes appear to be navy blue hi-top Converse All-Stars.
  • Right about when SpongeBob enters the Krusty Krab kitchen, his skin turns a darker yellow for the rest of the episode.
  • SpongeBob mentions that his shoes hadn't been untied since he was an egg, but in "Rock Bottom", he ties his shoes while he's waiting for the bus.
  • When the customers are leaving the Krusty Krab, one of them says, "We're going to the Chum Bucket!" This is the earliest mention of the Chum Bucket, which has on numerous other occasions been said to have never had a single customer, having customers. However, they are not actually shown going there.
  • When Mr. Krabs hears the customers leaving, he is in the bathroom, and when he rushes out and tries to convince them to stay, his pants are down, and one fish says "Oh yeah. We are definitely out of here." Ironically, the fish who says this is completely naked.
  • At the start of the episode, SpongeBob is watching stock footage of a sea anemone, with beach party music playing in the background. SpongeBob begins to lean closer to the TV, looking interested, when Gary enters the room. SpongeBob is startled and hastily switches stations, suggesting that he was watching something erotic. This footage was also seen in "The Sponge Who Could Fly" and "Rise and Shine".
  • The Football player shown on TV is Dan Marino.
  • This was the first episode to use the new, smaller captions, which would be used until "The Thing".
  • When SpongeBob attempts to cross the kitchen, he repeatedly trips over, causing the Krabby Patties to fly into Squidward's mouth. By the end of the scene, Squidward is bursting with Krabby Patties. However, in "Just One Bite", he claims to have never eaten a Krabby Patty (although he is not intentionally eating them in this episode).
  • Painty the Pirate's live-action lips are not the same as the opening
