"Toy Store of Doom" is a SpongeBob SquarePants episode from season 6. In this episode, SpongeBob and Patrick are locked in a toy store after closing.

Characters[]

Synopsis[]

SpongeBob and Patrick are very bored and have nothing to do. SpongeBob walks over to a toy chest and starts rummaging through it, but does not find anything that interests him or Patrick. It is then revealed that they are in Squidward's house, and he kicks them out.

They then begin walking outside, trying to find something to do. While they are walking, they notice some billboards that begin to introduce something. They follow the signs to a newly opened store called Toy Barrel. At first, it is not there, which makes the two of them cry. It appears soon afterward, courtesy of a crane. The construction worker throws Patrick inside, and SpongeBob throws himself inside as well.

"It's a man-tu! You can tell because it has extra support."

SpongeBob and Patrick spend the entire day singing songs and playing with the toys, and SpongeBob was in a mantu. all the while annoying an employee. Later, it comes to their disappointment that the Toy Barrel will be closing for the night. Not wanting to leave the store, Patrick formulates a plan to hide in the dollhouses. When the security guard checks the toy store during the night, Patrick and SpongeBob go undiscovered.

After revealing themselves, the two realize they have the whole store to themselves. They become jolly until the lights suddenly turn off, which scares the duo. They begin searching for a source of light until Patrick remembers he has a flashlight trapped inside his head. The light begins to shine from Patrick's eyes until it quickly burns out.

The two of them then become scared as they imagine the toys to be hideous creatures. They then see a big shadowy figure walking towards them, which frightens them further. SpongeBob decides they need to fight back against this supposed threat.

"Nothing can stop it!"

They enter the ladies restroom and dress up like soldiers, preparing to fight the shadow. They attempt to fight with bubbles. They dipped their wands, puffed out their cheeks as big as they can, then blew a bunch of bubbles at the shadow. This does them no good, however, as they completely missed. As the figure approaches, they see and realize it was just a little wind-up robot Patrick had been playing with earlier. They feel relived until Patrick decides to wind up the toy again, and as it starts walking, the two get frightened and run out of the store.

Upon exiting the Toy Barrel, they tell the children waiting outside not to go in due to the horrors that await them inside. They are then made aware that the toy store is just opening up for the morning. Finally, Patrick rushes back inside while exclaiming his love for toys, finishing the episode.

Release[]

Reception[]

"I love when hilarity and disturbing creepiness mingle. This one is like an episode of Night Gallery starring SpongeBob and Patrick, directed by Rob Zombie!"
  • "Toy Store of Doom" was ranked #6 during the SpongeBob's Top 100 event in the UK and Ireland from June 4-8, 2012.

Trivia[]

General[]

Toy Store of Doom 135
  • The title card background is briefly seen within this episode, albeit darker.
  • Near the beginning, SpongeBob takes a doll out that says, "Mama." This is the same doll that Plankton packs in a suitcase in "Walking Small," where it says, "Mama" as well.
    • This is also the same one that Mr. Krabs has in his doll-a-rama in "Wet Painters."
  • The ditty that Squidward sings when getting out of the shower is the same one he sings in the shower in The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie.
  • When SpongeBob greets Squidward as he is walking out of the bathroom, there is a golf iron to his right, which is not really a toy but rather sport equipment.
  • Patrick says he accidentally got a flashlight in his ear. This is one of the few times he is implied to have ears.
  • In the original script, when SpongeBob and Patrick run away from the toy robot, they bump into a shelf and bubble soap spills in their faces, which is why their eyes are burning when they leave the store. That scene was cut from the final version of the episode, but the scene of SpongeBob's and Patrick's eyes burning as they run out of the toy store is left intact causing it to make no sense.[citation needed]
  • This is the second episode to premiere on Saint Patrick's Day. The first was "Survival of the Idiots."
    • Coincidentally, this episode stars Patrick as a major character.
  • This was the second episode to premiere during Nickelodeon's "The Bob Squad" event.
  • This is the third episode where SpongeBob is revealed to be afraid of the dark. The first was "Graveyard Shift" and the second was "Night Light."
  • This is the last episode of the main series to date where "The Mob" is heard. It has since been replaced with "Bikini Bottom Police."
  • There are two online games based on this episode. They are called Toy Store Trial and Toy Barrel Peril, based on a memory game and attacking the toys, respectively.
  • In the Croatian dub, this episode is called "Ukleta Trgovina Igračaka," which translates to "Haunted Toy Store."[citation needed]

Cultural references[]

  • In one scene, in the background there are shelves lined with pyramids with eyes, a reference to the All-Seeing Eye. It is also a reference to "Cephalopod Lodge" and it doesn't have connections with Illuminati, which is also the case with "Cephalopod Lodge."

Errors[]

120b - Toy Store of Doom (462)

SpongeBob's eyelashes error.

  • When Patrick talks to SpongeBob about the toys coming after them, SpongeBob's eyelashes are missing.
  • When SpongeBob and Patrick wear their armor, SpongeBob's eyes are much lighter blue than usual.
