The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water is a film based on Nickelodeon's hit TV show SpongeBob SquarePants. In this movie, SpongeBob needs to go on a quest to discover a stolen recipe that takes him to our dimension, our world, where he tangles with a pirate (said by Tom Kenny)[3].
Synopsis
Burger-Beard the Pirate and his evil pirate crew have obtained a magical book that makes everything he writes come to life. But he needs the final page, the formula for the Krabby Patty. He obtains the formula and harnesses the power of the book. He soon uses it to destroy Bikini Bottom and turn it into an apocalyptic world. Now it's up to SpongeBob SquarePants and Patrick Star to go to the surface and stop him, with help from their friends Squidward Tentacles, Mr. Krabs, Sandy Cheeks, and their old enemy, Plankton to save the world and rewrite the story. They end up in a place called "Salty Shoals" and must become superheroes to stop Burger-Beard and the supervillains pirates.
Introduction
This is the second movie in the SpongeBob SquarePants franchise and is the sequel to "The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie." It arises to commemorate the 15th anniversary of the series (which started in 1999) as well commemorating 10 years since the first movie was released on November 19, 2004. This follows a trend of anniversaries being celebrated within the series with "Truth or Square" (2009) celebrating 10 years since "Help Wanted" which aired in 1999.
The animated segments of the movie are set to be directed by Paul Tibbitt who, on October 11, 2012, confirmed the second movie's release and posted the concept logo on his Twitter account.[4] He has further confirmed that this movie will have the same animation from the TV series and its predecessor. Like the first movie, this movie will feature live-action segments. These are directed by Mike Mitchell with scenes being shot in Savannah, Georgia and Tybee Island. Filming began on September 30, 2013 and lasted through November 5, 2013.[5] Locations where the movie was being filmed were made to look like beach communities with new décor being introduced. Mitchell further revealed the movie would be a mix of 2D and CGI animation as well as Live-action segments.[6]

- On August 22, 2013, Paramount Pictures had changed the original 2014 release and moved to February 2015 instead.
- On September 21, 2013, it was reported that Spanish actor Antonio Banderas had been cast for a live action role as Burger-Beard the Pirate.
- On January 27, 2014, when asked why the title of the film was changed from The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie 2 to SpongeBob SquarePants 2, the series Creative Director Vincent Waller replied "There is NO official title yet."[7]
- On March 24, 2014, a preview of the movie was shown at the Cinemacon.[8]
- On April 5, 2014, Paul Tibbitt revealed the trailer for the movie will be released "soon."[9]
- On June 5, 2014, the film's release date was moved up one week to February 6, 2015 in order to avoid competition with Universal Studios Universal Pictures' Fifty Shades of Grey, which is set to premiere on February 13, 2015.
- On June 10, 2014, the movie's name was revealed to be: "The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water."
- On July 25, 2014, at the San Diego Comic Con, Paramount Pictures released the first footage of the film.

Storyline
The storyline of the movie entails SpongeBob, Patrick, Squidward, Mr. Krabs, Sandy and Plankton going to find a stolen recipe which takes them to the real world. There they tangle with a pirate who possesses a book which makes what ever he writes in it come true. SpongeBob and co. manage to get hold of the book and turn into superheroes to fight the pirate.[3]
Animation
Viacom president and CEO Philippe Dauman said on hollywoodreporter.com:
"We will be releasing a SpongeBob movie at the end of 2014, which will serve to start off or be one of our films that starts off our new animation effort"[11] Of course, we now know the movie will be released on March 20, 2015.[12]
Filming
On July 11, 2013, it was announced that the film will start filming for the live action scenes in the Savannah area in Georgia in September, October and November 2013 for approximately 40 days.[13] City of Savannah Film Services director Jay Self said "we are very excited to be working with Paramount [Pictures] on this project [...] We know from experience how valuable the investment and exposure generated by a project like this can be for our community."[14]
Music
The original score for the movie is being composed by John Debney.[15]

- From the look of the trailer, the underwater parts will be a combination of the first movie and Season 9 animation. It will also have the color scheme of the first movie and the series.
- In the two trailers that have been released, it is suggested that this movie takes place before The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie because the Krusty Krab 2 is not shown.
- This would mean that Stephen Hillenburg's statement about the SpongeBob SquarePants Movie being the last story in the series is still true.
- In the second trailer for this movie, and most likely the movie itself, a fish breaks the fourth wall by saying, "All secondary characters come with me."
- If the scene from the 2nd trailer where Squidward inks himself is in the actual movie, it will be the second time he produces ink. The first was "Giant Squidward".
