Plot
SpongeBob awakens hungry in the night. While preparing a midnight snack, he leaves the refrigerator open, causing his home to freeze. By morning he has developed the "suds", an underwater version of the common cold. SpongeBob refuses to admit he is sick to avoid missing work, but finally gives in and rests. He asks Sandy to take him to the doctor, but is first visited by Patrick.
Patrick convinces SpongeBob that doctors are harbingers of torture and outdated magazines, so SpongeBob allows "Doctor Patrick" to practice on him. The insane treatments include making foot sandwiches and congesting his ostia with corks. When Sandy arrives, Patrick rolls SpongeBob away, where he winds up in front to the Krusty Krab. He sneezes near the restaurant, leaving only the foundation.
Mr. Krabs takes SpongeBob to a real doctor, who prescribes the "sponge treatment", which is performed by a live human hand named Hans. This involves being rinsed with soap and used to scrub various objects and people. The treatment cures SpongeBob completely, and he receives a lollipop. Jealous, Patrick pretends that he has the suds, but the doctor isn't fooled and as a punishment for impersonating a doctor, Hans gave Patrick a bad treatment and doesn't get a lollipop.

Trivia
- It actually is illegal and against the law to impersonate a doctor like Patrick did, as Sandy suggests. She's right, as it requires doctor insurance and a college-graduated degree.
- When the fridge is left open, it freezes SpongeBob's entire pineapple house. However, this would actually heat the house, as the heat removed from the inside of the refrigerator is released out the back, along with the extra heat from the motor.
- The music is heard throughout the episode is Tchaikovsky's "Dance of The Sugar-Plum Fairy" from "The Nutcracker." The music is also heard in "The Truth of Gold".
- The man taking a shower during the live-action "sponge treatment" scenes is Tom Kenny, who provides the voice of SpongeBob. The same footage of him in the shower is also seen in "Neptune's Spatula".
- This episode gives out a hint that Patrick might have taken medical classes.
- Closed captioning error: When Mr. Krabs counts his money he says "shiny dimes" but in the captioning, it says "shiny tines".
- This episode could be considered a direct continuation of "Sleepy Time".
- People in 2009 thought that this episode is a parody of Swine Flu.
