The Endless Summer

"The Endless Summer" is a SpongeBob SquarePants educational short. In this short, SpongeBob goes to work to find Mr. Krabs taking advantage of global warming. And follows his idea by making more global warming.

Characters

Synopsis

SpongeBob is on his way to the Krusty Krab when he spots a large factory pipe mounted on the restaurant's roof. Inside is a parked boat pumping carbon dioxide into the pipe and out into the atmosphere. Mr. Krabs explains that he is using global warming to his own advantage, creating an "Endless Summer" and allowing him to open the "Krusty Pool" year-round. However, SpongeBob has a plan to create a more effective endless summer.

Later, Mr. Krabs is seen in his office playing with tiny wax figurines of him and a customer of the Krusty Pool. However, the figurines suddenly start to melt as a result of the raised temperatures. When Mr. Krabs exits his office demanding who turned up the heat, he sees seventeen boats pumping carbon dioxide into the air.

Outside, Bikini Bottom has become a burning wasteland. When Mr. Krabs finds SpongeBob throwing a tire on a fire, he explains that he is helping to cause more global warming. A mob of citizens is seen running towards the Krusty Krab, which Mr. Krabs thinks are going to the pool and orders SpongeBob to fill it. However, they literally run right over Mr. Krabs, and Patrick explains to him that they are moving north, not being able to live in the new climate because it is too hot.

Mr. Krabs is both depressed and frustrated from the heat, while SpongeBob is excited to cannonball into the pool. However, the water quickly evaporates and SpongeBob painfully lands in the empty pool, exclaiming, "Ouch."

Production

Development

Stephen Hillenburg went on a website, www.stopglobalwarming.org, and had an idea. He told the people who made the website to make an animated SpongeBob short film, a film based on saving the world from warming up. So, they got ready to work on their short film.

Hillenburg wrote the script, directed the short film, produced, and coordinated the production. Fred Seibert took the roles of executive producer and production designer. In the August of 2004, the pre-production crew designed characters, props, and locations, while the other pre-production artists worked on their storyboards and visual development on their own, because storyboards and designs are made by the United Plankton Pictures pre-production unit.

Post production

Finally, the United Plankton Pictures and Rough Draft production unit are ready to get to the post production unit. Hillenburg supervised the post production.

Editorial

The United Plankton Pictures, Inc. editorial unit edits the footage of animation and puts sound, music, and special effects. The editorial unit was using the editorial software, Avid. Avid was used to edit footage.

Sound

The United Plankton Pictures sound unit tells Advantage Sound Services crew to record and mix sound, editing the sound, and designing the sound. Skywalker Sound unit joined the post-production unit as well. The sound unit of United Plankton Pictures told the Skywalker Sound and Christopher Boyes, sound designer of James Cameron's Avatar, to make sound effects, designing the sound, recording and mixing the sound, and edit the sound effects. Sound effects are used from the animated SpongeBob short film. Foley unit made the foley effects, it was created by One Step Up. ADR group was additionally voiced by themselves as Bikini Bottom townspeople. The ADR group was originally voiced by the Nickelodeon Animation Studio voice recording unit.

Voice Talent

The voices of 3 characters who lived in Bikini Bottom, they are voiced by Tom Kenny, Bill Fagerbakke, and Clancy Brown. The 3 voice actors are recording voices from the short film, and they are recording at the Nickelodeon Animation Studios voice recording unit. In addition, they are the only voice actors in the Season 5 episode, "Pat No Pay."

This short was produced by Nickelodeon Animation Studio, United Plankton Pictures and Rough Draft Korea (animated sequences), and distributed by StopGlobalWarming.org, Frederator Studios (better known for creating The Fairly OddParents), and Paramount Pictures Corporation. It appeared in Earth to America, which debuted on TBS on June 30, 2005. It was released online on February 7, 2006. The title is based on the 1966 film, The Endless Summer. The short can be seen in QuickTime format on the site, and was also featured in The Nicktoons Network Animation Festival in August 2005. This film was dedicated to Florida and California, the 2 hottest states in the USA.

SpongeBob's Krusty Krab Employee Hat is larger in this short than in any other appearances.
Doors in the Krusty Krab usually do not have doorknobs.
There is no cash register in the Krusty Krab.
SpongeBob's pupils are yellow for a second.
If carbon dioxide (CO₂) is made underwater in real life, it will make bubbles and go above-water. CO₂ also turns water into acid.
