Layout

Hey all! I've been talking with Rgoodermote lately about helping the wiki with some things that will help improve the user experience. I also noticed that you're looking for ways to keep editors around for the long haul. I had a few ideas that I think can help, and I came up with a design for the main page that I'd love to get some feedback on. Some of the tricks we've picked up on the Entertainment Team focus on winning at Google and helping readers find content with a pleasing aesthetic. One thing Google recommends for hiigh ranking is less than 100 links on the main page, and to have text links to some of your site's top content. Another helpful navigation tool is to keep links that only editors would be interested in, out of the prominent areas of the wiki. So these are some of the principles I've used in putting together this page here. The black boxes are where anonymous users would see ads, I've added text links to articles with the most traffic, and moved the stuff that would be of interest to editors down to the "Join this wiki" section. That links to a page that collects some of the sections that I didn't include in the main page mockup. What do you guys think? The wiki is getting some good traffic and I'd love to see the community really explode and become one of the internet's top Spongebob resources. I think we can do it! —Scott (talk) 20:12, 27 July 2009 (UTC)

My god, I love it! I see no real reason to oppose this. How about everyone else? - Rgoodermote  23:44, 27 July 2009 (UTC)
Excellent. I love the layout. Some of the placements of the content need changing, but other than that, it's awesome. -AMK152(talkcontribs) 23:48, 27 July 2009 (UTC)
The text links under each bulleted image for characters are obviously the show's main characters, so they should be on the front page for when Google indexes the site. I got most of everything else from Special:Mostvisitedpages since it's a good idea to have easy access to the pages that people are apparently looking for the most. The stuff in the right hand column (Featured, Did you know and Quotes) is fun stuff for readers to look through while the left side under the main links is all topical (News and On this day). And then of course the Join this wiki section which is important for people who want to become editors, but isn't necessary for the front page either for readers or Google. If it's okay to go ahead and copy it over, I can do that now and then we can figure out if there's still any sections that need to be moved around. —Scott (talk) 00:26, 28 July 2009 (UTC)
Way ahead of you. User:AMK152/test10. -AMK152(talkcontribs) 00:49, 28 July 2009 (UTC)
Awesome! I have a tool that counts the number of links that Google sees when it crawls the page. We're down to 106 which is a great improvement! Are there a few more we can trim? I'll be monitoring our Google rank over the enxt couple of weeks and let you guys know how we're performing. I think these tweaks are going to help a lot of people find the wiki :) —Scott (talk) 21:55, 29 July 2009 (UTC)

(undent)Is the Main Page supposed to look like this?. It could be that I am using a trunk build of FF (3.6prealpha) and that could be causing display issues. However it appears to only be the Main Page. Also, I'm liking the changes that are being made. I'm wishing I could help out more, but I either don't know what is going on at the moment or not present to help. - Rgoodermote  22:04, 29 July 2009 (UTC)

Our servers are being a little slow to update today. I apologize for that. Here's what I'm seeing, and what everyone should see once the caching servers around the world all catch up with one another. —Scott (talk) 22:08, 29 July 2009 (UTC)
I looked in Chrome, it's my browser. CSS might not work correctly in it. Hey, is the yellow bar supposed to go on past the logo like that? - Rgoodermote  22:14, 29 July 2009 (UTC)
Yeah, it should look that way. I thought it looked funny when it was cut off abrubtly on wider screens. —Scott (talk) 22:16, 29 July 2009 (UTC)
Well you could do this, note this is a very quick and dirty edit in Photoshop. - Rgoodermote  22:27, 29 July 2009 (UTC)
Sure, I could do that. Is that what you prefer? —Scott (talk) 22:53, 29 July 2009 (UTC)
Actually that is what I prefer, it's neater and looks nicer on the higher res's. What do you think? Anything about my idea that you'd like to change? - Rgoodermote  23:00, 29 July 2009 (UTC)
I like the way the longer strip looks on my 1280px screen, but no worries :) I'll adjust the graphic and the code. —Scott (talk) 23:03, 29 July 2009 (UTC)

(undent)Looks pretty odd on my 1400x1050 screen actually. Still black and white on Firefox, what is the CSS code you are using for that? - Rgoodermote  23:27, 29 July 2009 (UTC)

It looks like you have a modified version of Firefox. I don't know how you got the Wikipedia graphic in there. It looks the same for me now in Firefox, Safari, Chrome, Opera and IE. —Scott (talk) 23:34, 29 July 2009 (UTC)
Actually I'm running a nightly build of Firefox (3.6Alpha). It has a different engine than the others. With the consequences being that certain things don't work right.- Rgoodermote  00:01, 30 July 2009 (UTC)
Hey, just throwing this out, how would this do as our new main page?. I was thinking that we could do a minimalistic approach instead of our old clustered design, have each area of the Main page setup in a different area. Like the Featured article get's it's own place and so on and in addition we could also use that area as a place to vote for a new article and even a list of old articles that have been featured. The same can go for every other thing we have on the Main Page. This is of course just a draft version that I threw together, so do to it as you see please. Whatcha guys think? - Rgoodermote  04:00, 30 July 2009 (UTC)
