SpongeBob SquarePants is a popular cartoon, and has been referenced in popular culture numerous times. Several of these references are from other Nickelodeon shows.

  • In the 2007 Alvin and the Chipmunks movie, clips of the SpongeBob SquarePants episode, "Have You Seen This Snail?" are seen plus the theme song.
  • In Seth MacFarlane's Ted, John and Ted are seen watching the SpongeBob SquarePants episode "Procrastination" at the beginning.
  • In Zarthura, clips from the episode Bubblestand are seen. Also, Danny asks Walter if he can watch SpongeBob SquarePants after he changes the channel from SpongeBob to Sports Center
  • In Fred 2: Night of the Living Fred, Fred dressed up as SpongeBob for Halloween.
  • In the 2012 drama-mystery film Flight, when Whip is changing the channel, a brief clip of "New Digs" is shown.
  • In the 2010 film The Karate Kid, the SpongeBob intro is briefly played, and clips of "Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy III" were seen.
  • In the 2012 movie This is 40, clips of "No Weenies Allowed" were are seen.
  • In It's a Very Merry Muppet Christmas Movie, Whoopi Goldberg says she's just lucky SpongeBob isn't on.
  • In the 2005 movie War of the Worlds, clips from "The Secret Box" are seen.
  • In the 2010 film Grown Ups, one of the girls mentions talking to SpongeBob while taking on a "cup and string" phone.
  • In the 2002 movie Orange County, Lance is seen watching and laughing at the episode "Help Wanted".
  • Clips from the episode "Jellyfishing" appeared in the 2003 film, Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life, but the characters' voices were spoken in Mandarin Chinese.
  • In the movie Firewall, SpongeBob can be heard saying the line "Did you ever notice how big squirrels' teeth are?" from this episode in one scene, meaning "Squirrel Jokes" made a cameo in the movie also other SpongeBob clips are heard but they are mostly from "Squirrel Jokes".
  • In the 2008 movie Cloverfield, in the television store, before the main character sees the news, clips of "MuscleBob BuffPants" were seen.
  • In the 2014 film, The Lego Movie, a SpongeBob Minifigure made a cameo as a MasterBuilder. Note: Lego SpongeBob's cameo appears to have been removed in the Netflix version of this movie for unknown reasons.
  • In the 2004 documentary film Super Size Me, a SpongeBob lunchbox was briefly seen. Later in the film, a kid can be shown wearing a SpongeBob T-Shirt.
  • In Tower Heist, during the Macy's Thanksgiving parade, a SpongeBob float is seen with the theme song playing, and as a cameo shows a guy in the background selling character balloons and at the top you can briefly see a SpongeBob balloon, with Patrick.
  • In the 2015 Film Daddy's Home starring Will Ferrel and Mark Wahlberg. Close to the end of movie there is a man who is wearing a Squidward tie and he has a couple of talking lines. Mark Wahlberg's character later on calls him "Squidward Tie" to make the reference even more obvious.
