SpongeBob's driver's license is a driver's license that is given to SpongeBob (and then revoked) in various episodes, beginning with "Sleepy Time." He is never given the license permanently, leading to his perpetual enrollment at Mrs. Puff's Boating School. Earning this license is SpongeBob's biggest goal in life.[1]

Description[]

It looks like an average driver's license. It is printed on rectangular plastic, with black ink writing. It has all of the information needed about SpongeBob, including his birth date and address. It also has his full name written at the top, with a bigger font.

Role in series[]

SpongeBob is never given his license permanently, due to a series of events resulting in its destruction or invalidation in many episodes. For example, in "Bumper to Bumper," he gets his boating license, but it turns out Mrs. Puff had violated her house arrest, thus declaring the test "null and void." The Officer grabs the license and rips it up. In "SpongeBob LongPants," SpongeBob is able to obtain a license due to his long pants, but its issuing was rescinded once he switched to shorter pants.

He is also an anxious driver who constantly annoys his boating school teacher Mrs. Puff. In the episode "No Free Rides," Mrs. Puff only gives SpongeBob his license to never teach him again. However, she imagines what will happen if SpongeBob drives, destroys the town, and fears that she will be blamed for the destruction. She consoles that SpongeBob lacks a boat to drive, much less one to wreck. Upon arriving at her home, however, she finds SpongeBob and his parents inside with a giant cake to thank her for her teachings, as futile as they had once seemed. SpongeBob and Mrs. Puff get another surprise when they see that SpongeBob's parents bought him a brand new boatmobile. In utter amazement, SpongeBob falls into the cake in a dead faint. As SpongeBob's parents take him home, Mrs. Puff realizes the danger he now poses and decides to settle the matter before anyone realizes she lets him skip boating school. SpongeBob's parents tuck him into his bed and tell him that he should not drive anywhere that night due to his head injury. As soon as his parents leave, he sneaks out his bedroom window, gets into the boat, and falls asleep. Not long after, Mrs. Puff steals SpongeBob's boat and drives it away. SpongeBob wakes up to find the masked Mrs. Puff in the process of stealing his vehicle and fights her off. Mrs. Puff tries pushing SpongeBob out of the boat, but he grabs hold of the rear bumper. She next drives through various obstacles to lose him, but he catches up to her while two police officers watch the commotion from their vehicle. In their struggle, SpongeBob ultimately reveals the thief to be Mrs. Puff, rendering him senseless just as the boat crashes into the police car. SpongeBob and Mrs. Puff talk in the Bikini Bottom jail where Mrs. Puff is being held. Mrs. Puff apologizes to SpongeBob and says she shouldn't have passed him when she knew he wasn't ready. SpongeBob understands he'll have to relinquish his license, but Mrs. Puff tells him he can continue his lessons with Mrs. Flounder, another driving teacher starting a new class. SpongeBob assures her she is the only one who he wants to teach him, giving her a tip that the warden will let her go early in exchange for free driving lessons. In "Burst Your Bubble," Bubble Mrs. Puff gives him a bubble license.
