SpongeBob and Sandy are good friends. Series creator Stephen Hillenburg stated in the "Everybody's Talking: The Voices Behind SpongeBob SquarePants" special feature on The Complete 1st Season DVD and a 2014 interview that he created Sandy as "a strong female character that could be a friend to SpongeBob but not a love interest."[1]

  • Series creator Stephen Hillenburg made it clear that SpongeBob should never have a romance, since he is asexual[2] (as all real-life sea sponges are) and too innocent for it. Vincent Waller said that SpongeBob getting a significant other was "definitely on the Steve shortlist of NOs."[3]
    • Ironically, back in 2010, Waller created a poster for a charity auction with SpongeBob and Patrick at Glove World, and the two stood behind a fence with carved out text that read "SB ❤️ Sandy".[4]
  • Earlier in 2004, a book called SpongeBob SquarePants Survival Guide written by David Lewman contained jokes about SpongeBob having a crush on someone, indicated to be Sandy. Lewman, having never worked on the show, was unaware of Hillenburg's anti-romance rule.
  • As Hillenburg instructed, the television series will never approach the topic of SpongeBob having a romantic relationship. The fake wedding which was a play in the TV movie "Truth or Square" seems to be a jab at people who keep demanding it.
  • When SpongeBob loses a life in The SpongeBob Movie Game: Sponge on the Run, one of the phrases he will say is "Tell... Sandy... I love her."[5]

Their behavior towards each other[]

  • Their relationship seems to be close.
  • It is very rare for Patrick to visit Sandy without SpongeBob, but SpongeBob visits Sandy without Patrick regularly.
  • Sandy's relationship with Patrick is strained due to his stupidity, while her relationship with SpongeBob seems to be stronger. Only once in a while does she get annoyed with him, usually due to his high energy and unending optimism.

Activities they enjoy doing together[]

  • Karate - SpongeBob and Sandy do karate often. Their first karate moment is "Karate Choppers," though they had previously discussed their interest in karate in "Tea at the Treedome." In some episodes, SpongeBob tries to sneak up on Sandy to win, but SpongeBob's plan backfired. As the series progressed, they did less karate, and do science instead.
  • Science - Even though SpongeBob is not very good at science, he is always excited to help Sandy with her scientific endeavors. Not wanting to disappoint him, Sandy uses SpongeBob as a test monkey for her inventions. In "Perfect Chemistry," Sandy called SpongeBob "lab partner" at the end, which he made a huge deal out of.
  • Hanging out at Goo Lagoon - In season 1, they hang out at Goo Lagoon in episodes such as in "Ripped Pants" and "MuscleBob BuffPants." In these episodes, SpongeBob tries to impress Sandy by being masculine and looking tough and strong, only to find that Sandy appreciates him just the way that he is.

Times as enemies[]

Although despite being close friends, there are many occasions when they fight or get mad at each other, where it is mostly Sandy who gets mad.

  • "Ripped Pants": When SpongeBob pretends to have drowned and says it's a ripped pants joke, Sandy gets mad at him for playing with her emotions.
  • "Sandy's Rocket": When Sandy sees that SpongeBob and Patrick have captured everyone in Bikini Bottom thinking they're aliens, Sandy gets mad at them, but then both of them capture Sandy thinking she's an alien too.
  • "MuscleBob BuffPants": At the end of the episode, Sandy gets mad at SpongeBob for faking his muscles and forces him to switch channels on TV 100 times, and then has him do 100 more.
  • "The Great Snail Race": Sandy kicks SpongeBob into the air for his sexist insult towards Gary the day before.
  • "Sleepy Time": She gets mad at SpongeBob for ruining her dream.
  • "Texas": SpongeBob offends Texas, and Sandy gets mad at him and chases him.
  • "Survival of the Idiots": After she finds out SpongeBob and Patrick ripped off all her fur and used it as clothes, she doesn't allow them to leave her treedome until her fur grows back.
  • "Squirrel Jokes": She gets mad at SpongeBob's squirrel jokes and later proves to him how much she hates them by pretending to be indeed what SpongeBob said in his jokes, such as gluing him to a log and overhydrating him (making SpongeBob as big as the treedome.)
  • "Pressure": SpongeBob makes fun of Sandy for being a land creature.
  • "Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy IV": She gets mad at SpongeBob for shrinking her.
  • "Pranks a Lot": SpongeBob scares her by moving things in her treedome, and she, scared, flies back to Texas.
  • "Waiting": SpongeBob beats her up due to waiting for his toy, and Sandy leaves angrily.
  • "What Ever Happened to SpongeBob?": SpongeBob accidentally destroys her robot, causing her to get mad and she angrily kicks him out and calls him "Idiot Boy." Later, a remorseful Sandy gets insulted by an amnesiac SpongeBob.
  • "Gone": She goes with all Bikini Bottom away from SpongeBob and leaves him scared.
  • "Patty Caper": SpongeBob suspects her for stealing the secret Krabby Patty ingredient.
  • "The Krabby Kronicle": SpongeBob writes a lie about Sandy, causing her to lose her science trophies, though Mr. Krabs made him do this.
  • "House Sittin' for Sandy": At the end of the episode, she gets mad at SpongeBob for accidentally destroying her treedome.
  • "Girls' Night Out": She agrees to prank SpongeBob, and that prank later almost kills SpongeBob.
  • "The String": Sandy gets mad at SpongeBob for unraveling her tail.
  • "Sandy's Nutty Nieces": At the beginning, when Sandy's making an invention, SpongeBob fools around with her.

Trivia[]

  • Vincent Waller claimed in a tweet that he was under the impression a romance between Sandy and SpongeBob was suggested during her introduction, but it did not work organically.[citation needed]
  • The original pitch bible for the series mentions that Sandy is the "apple of SpongeBob's eye," indicating that early on in development she was meant to be a love interest for SpongeBob. However, by the time the series was airing, this had been scrapped.
