"One Krabs Trash" is a SpongeBob SquarePants episode from season 3. In this episode, Mr. Krabs sells SpongeBob a valuable soda drink hat.

Characters[]

Synopsis[]

Mr. Krabs holds a yard sale at his house where he passes off his (and other people's) garbage as valuable antiques. Patrick and SpongeBob come by, and Mr. Krabs tricks them into buying a plunger and a soda drinking hat, respectively. After they leave, several people come by and each of them offers a large sum of money to Mr. Krabs for the soda drinking hat, prompting Mr. Krabs to get it back from SpongeBob.

Mr. Krabs finds SpongeBob, who has modified the hat to blow bubbles. He first tells SpongeBob that he looks like a girl with the hat, but SpongeBob thinks it was a compliment. Mr. Krabs then tries to offer him other hats in exchange for the soda drinking hat, but SpongeBob declines the offers. At night, Mr. Krabs draws a ghost on a paper and uses a fishing rod to scare SpongeBob into giving up the hat. The "ghost" tells SpongeBob that he must give the hat back to the owner; when pressed, Mr. Krabs invents the name Smitty Werbenjägermanjensen. However, Krabs' plan backfires when SpongeBob tells him that there is an actual dead person with that name and SpongeBob has placed the hat with Jensen's remains. Mr. Krabs goes to the cemetery to retrieve it. He goes looking for the grave, seeing Squidward weeping over a grave literally memorializing his hopes and dreams along the way, until finally finding Smitty's massive tombstone.

He defiles the grave and takes the hat out, only for Smitty to rise up and tell him to give the hat back. When Mr. Krabs refuses, he gets the army of the living dead to attack him. Fortunately, he successfully defeats all the skeletons and runs back to the businesspeople to get his money. However, they have found out there is a whole warehouse of those hats, severely depreciating their value. They see SpongeBob wearing a hat with clapping hands and chase after him to buy the hat from him for even higher sums than they offered Mr. Krabs for his hat. Mr. Krabs breaks down at the lost financial opportunity. Squidward passes by, watching Mr. Krabs cry and ironically calls his boss a baby as the episode ends.

Trivia[]

General[]

  • Soda drink hats are famous headgear normally worn by baseball players for when they get thirsty during a game.
    • In addition, the soda drink hat in this episode says "#1" on the front, in reference to the numbers used to identify baseball players, on both hats and jerseys.
  • The grave stone markings read:
    • Here lies Squidward's hopes and dreams
    • R.I.P. Stupid
    • I'm with Stupid
    • Diver Dan
    • Rest in Peace
    • Old Salty lies beneath
    • Smitty Werben Man Jensen
  • This is the fourth episode where its title card is animated, the first being "SB-129," the second being "Prehibernation Week," and the third being "Idiot Box."
  • This was the last episode to use the 1986 Paramount logo until "Ghoul Fools."
  • On YouTube Poops, the tombstone that reads "Here lies Squidward's hopes and dreams" has been used very often, usually replacing most or all of the text.
  • This, "Help Wanted," "Pickles," "Employee of the Month," and "Best Day Ever" are the only five episodes to have SpongeBob's bed placed on the right side of his room and not the left.
  • Floater's Cemetery is a pun and reference to how fish float when they die.
  • Patrick pays Mr. Krabs $7.00, but the toilet plunger costs $5.00, so Mr. Krabs owed him $2.00 in change. However, due to Mr. Krabs' greed and Patrick's idiocy, Mr. Krabs said nothing and made a 140% gain on his sale with Patrick, while Patrick believes himself to be a "smart shopper."
  • Mr. Krabs tells SpongeBob that the curse will descend on him unless he returns the hat to its "owner," referring to himself. Mr. Krabs is not the owner of the hat, because SpongeBob bought the hat from him, making him the new owner.
    • Mr. Krabs also stole trash from around the area, making the true original owner of the hat the person who threw it away.
      • This also should have foreshadowed the value of the hat to Mr. Krabs. Finding the hat in the garbage should have indicated the worthlessness of the hat due to the overstocked warehouse full of them. However, as the title indicates, One Krabs Trash is Another Man's Treasure.
  • In the Polish dub, the episode's title is "Bezcenny śmieć Kraba," which translates to "Krab's Priceless Trash."[4]
    • In the Czech dub, the episode's title is "Krabsovy poklady," which translates to "Krabs' Treasures."[citation needed]
    • In the Croatian dub, the episode's name is "Klještićevo smeće," which translates to "Krabs' Trash."[citation needed]
      • In the dub, instead of saying that the umbrella belonged to the queen of Switzerland, Mr. Krabs says that it belonged to the president of Bikini Bottom, to which fish replies, "We do not have a president!" Then, Mr. Krabs tries to justify the holes in the umbrella by saying "As well as our law."[citation needed]
  • In the Indonesian dub, instead of saying 'Of course I am!' after he thinks it is defile to dig a grave just for money, he said 'Terkutuklah diriku!' or 'Curse me!'. This could've been misheard by the localization team since 'Course' and 'Curse' have similar pronunciations.
  • On the June 12, 2017 airing, this episode aired with the Nick Jr. on Nick screen bug instead of the original Nickelodeon screen bug.[5]
  • The French title card translates to "Captain Krabs is doing business" in English.[6]
  • The "Here Lies Squidward's Hopes and Dreams" grave from this episode was later used in "Friendiversary" when SpongeBob remembers Squidward.
  • According to production order, this would be the very first episode Kaz boarded for the series.

Cultural references[]

  • The name of the episode is a pun on the saying, "One man's trash is another man's treasure."
    • Fittingly, the French Narrator says exactly the same phrase at the beginning of the episode when referencing Mr. Krabs' yard sale.
  • One of the grave stones markings is read "I'm with Stupid," a reference to an eponymous phrase on novelty T-shirts and a season 2 episode of the same name.
  • While he is fighting the skeletons, Mr. Krabs says "Look at me! I'm Errol Fin!" This is a reference to Errol Flynn's sword-fighting as Robin Hood in the 1938 film The Adventures of Robin Hood.
  • Mr. Krabs says, "I've seen this on the Late Show," referencing the CBS late night talk show of the same name. However, in this episode, the Late Show he is talking about appears to be a horror show.
  • Mr. Krabs encounters and is briefly frightened by a black snail; as snails are seen as underwater cats in SpongeBob, this scene is a reference to real-world superstitions surrounding black cats.
  • When trying to convince a customer to by an old umbrella, Mr. Krabs tries to excuse its holes by saying the umbrella belonged to the Queen of Switzerland, a reference to the so-called "eyes" often associated with North American varieties of Swiss cheese.
  • The hat Mr. Krabs offers SpongeBob has the phrase "Foxy Grandpa" written on it, likely referencing the comic strip of the same name.

Errors[]

Kaz credited second writer in One Krabs Trash
Kent Osborne credited as second writer in One Krabs Trash
Left: Kaz is incorrectly credited as the second writer in recent TV airings.
Right: Kent Osborne is correctly credited as the second writer in DVD and international DVD releases.
  • Kaz is credited as the second writer in the opening credits on this episode in recent TV airings, digital versions, and streaming releases. However, on DVD releases and non-USA DVD releases, Kent Osborne is credited instead.
SB's bedroom error

SpongeBob's bedroom is on the first floor.

  • In this episode, SpongeBob's bedroom is on the first floor, when it should be on the third. In the next scene, his room is back on the third floor.
  • When SpongeBob gives Mr. Krabs a bill and then goes home to search for more money, he comes back with two bills in his hand.
One Krabs Trash 127

Squidward's house is missing.

  • When Mr. Krabs leaves SpongeBob's house and heads to the cemetery, Squidward's house is not there.
  • Before Mr. Krabs tries to remember what SpongeBob told him, there are headstones all around him. However, when he sees Smitty's headstone, there are no other headstones around.
  • When Smitty lies in his coffin, his neck has visible vertebrae, but when stands and speaks to Mr. Krabs, he only has one bone for his neck.
