Plot

SpongeBob and Patrick are at a Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy fan club meeting, where they learn a new movie will be made based on the heroes, and meet the actors who will be portraying them. SpongeBob is offended that the movie is using actors instead of the real Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy, and tells the fan club that they must boycott the movie. Then he and Patrick are thrown out of the building.The two then go to Shady Shoals and tell Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy that Drippy Brothers Studios is making a movie about them and using actors. The heroes find the news horrible, and Patrick suggests they make their own movie, which they agree with. After brainstorming ideas at the Krusty Krab, SpongeBob and the crew meet to make the movie. SpongeBob is the director and in charge of the movie, Squidward, the makeup artist, prepares the actors for the movie, Sandy is in charge of using the dynamite for explosion scenes, Patrick is the cameraman, Mr. Krabs caters the crew with Krabby Patties, Pearl is the leading lady and the invisible boat mobile, and Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy, of course, are the stars of the movie. While they are filming, Plankton appears auditions for Man Ray, but SpongeBob tells him that Man Ray isn't in their movie. Plankton is given the job of working the microphone instead. Mermaid Man has trouble with one of his lines and it takes 5003 takes to get it right. A scene is filmed where Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy ride Pearl up a steep mountain to Kelp-Thing's hideout. Pearl is too heavy to pull, and slides down the mountain, crashing into the sets. Everything is destroyed, and Patrick reveals that he had been filming with the lens cap on, meaning that they have no footage. SpongeBob goes berserk with frustration, but Mermaid Man convinces him to finish the movie. Mr. Krabs holds the premiere of SpongeBob's production in his restaurant, hoping to make lots of money from the movie. The members of the Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy Fan Club attend, but only because the Drippy Bros. production is sold out. The movie is then shown. SpongeBob plays with a car near a box with "Lox" on it. Then the patty vault is open and Kelp-Thing comes down, but then Mermaidman( as Sandy) attacks him. He and Barnacleboy unite. Then it ends. The movie proves to be terrible, and the fans are not pleased. However, Mermaid Man is glad that SpongeBob proved he and Barnacle Boy still have some "action" left in their old bones. they then laugh all happily due to their efforts even though their movie received negative reception from the Fans.

Trivia

• At the end of SpongeBob's version of the film, we can hear a dolphin chirping, sounding exactly like bad word #11 from Sailor Mouth.
• Pearl really didn't get in the movie.
• This episode has the longest title of any episode of the series.
• This episode is number 14 in Tom Kenny's Top 20 on iTunes. His description says:

"When SpongeBob's heroes are considered too 'old' to portray themselves in a Hollywood-type movie, he decides to make his own. As a comic book fan, I've sat through horrible movies based on classic comics, wishing I could 'do it right!'"

• Patrick says that he had the camera lens cap on for the entirely of the filming, but the lens cap is off in all previous scenes of filming.
• On Nickelodeon, "Mermaid Man and; Barnacle Boy VI: The Motion Picture" is shown after "Enemy In-Law", but the listings say the opposite.
• When Spongebob says "...Who will help us fufill your dreams of being on the big screen." the hand that he holds out only has 3 fingers.
• Before the 1st explosion the light were on. After the explosion the lights were off. However, the explosion may have broken the lights.
• Spongebob's voice isn't the usual higher pitch found in the post Hillenburg-era.
• Drippy Brothers Studios is a parody of Warner Bros. Pictures.
• This is the second time Mermaid Man's belt is purple with a blue M. The first was Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy IV.
• Spongebob says "We'll make a REAL Mermaid Man movie, right here in Shady Shoals!", But they filmed in a random place in the middle of nowhere.
• Running Gag: When someone says "boom" in a sentence, the scene changes to Sandy preparing to use a detonator, with Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy in the background. She asks "Did somebody say boom?" and pushes the detonator. Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy blow up.
• At one point Mermaid Man has a boom mike stuck in his mouth. Ten years prevous, on Ren and Stimpy, John K. has to edit a similar gag from a cartoon because Nickelodeon censors deemed it too suggestive (it was redone so the mike was shoved up Stimpy's right nostril).
• Mr. Krabs catered the affair, but didn't mention payment for his services. He may have thought he'd get payment when people came to buy tickets for the movie. Or, he may have thought free advertisement for Krabby Patties would count as payment.
• When Mermaid Man flubs his lines, he first says "swollen Krabby Patties", then "stolen Maggie Daddies".
• In Spongebob's movie, the Patty Vault from Just One Bite is seen again.
• After Squidward gives Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy their "makeovers", an explosion from Sandy causes them to revert back to normal.
• When Plankton auditions as Man-Ray, Spongebob tells him Man-Ray isn't in the movie and assigns him boom mike duties. However, when Spongebob is forced to redo the movie (after it's revealed that Patrick kept the lens cap on during the previous filming), he could have recast Plankton (rather than use a prop) as Kelp-Thing, since he knew Plankton wanted a villainous role.
• Considering Patrick's reputation for messing things up, it's strange that Spongebob would assign him as cameraman, perhaps the most important duty when it comes to filming.
• Squidward is at first uninterested in Spongebob's assignment to do makeup, but when Spongebob uses the word "artist" to describe his duty, Squidward is suddenly eager to accept the role. It's strange, since Squidward is an artist, many of Squidward's interests involve makeup (dancing, acting, etc.), and makeup is itself a form of art.
• Spongebob cast Pearl as a prop (the Boatmobile) and a prop to portray a character (Kelp-Thing).
• At the start of the movie a bottle of glue is seen.
• When SpongeBob and Patrick are at the fan club meeting, the president says they would see the actors of the movie "tonight". A few minutes later, though, SpongeBob and Patrick are kicked outside and it's daytime.
• This episode was one of the episodes that were originally supposed to air during Season 3, but didn't and got remade. The other episodes were Krusty Towers, Patrick SmartPants, The Lost Mattress, and Whale of a Birthday.
