Plot

Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy are going on vacation, and they ask SpongeBob and Patrick to look after the Mermalair. They ask them if they can play with the various gadgets, but are told not to touch anything. While wandering around the Mermalair, SpongeBob and Patrick find Man Ray, one of Mermaid Man's most feared nemeses, stuck in a prison of frozen tartar sauce. Patrick unleashes him, and he attempts to kill them, but is stopped by a "tickle-belt" (as seen in Episode 17!), a device that tickles whoever is wearing it when a button is pressed. SpongeBob and Patrick offer to teach him how to be a good person, and he accepts, in order to get the belt off. After struggling with SpongeBob's "goodness lessons", an angry Patrick, who has been severely injured by Man Ray's fits of anger (as his difficulty with the tests were largely due to Patrick's stupidity), takes control of the lesson and says, "I'm thinking of a number between 1 and 100. What is it?" Man Ray answers 62, and Patrick says it's wrong and tickles Man Ray. SpongeBob tells Patrick that that has nothing to do with being good, and they start fighting over the remote, breaking it in the process and causing the belt to go out of control and tickle Man Ray harder than ever. Man Ray begs them to remove it, and says "please", which SpongeBob sees as proof of his "goodness", and removes the belt. Man Ray then reveals his true intentions, and steals the Aqua Glove and the Squid Ink Bomb, and turning SpongeBob and Patrick into dust, and escaping. SpongeBob and Patrick then change into Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy outfits, making them "ManSponge" and "Boy Patrick", and go after Man Ray. They catch up with him, and turn on the "Orb of Confusion" to confuse Man Ray, but end up dazing themselves instead. Man Ray then tries to rob a bank, but when trying to do evil, he feels the belt's tickle, even though he isn't wearing it. After failing to be taken seriously, he gives up and decides to open an account instead. Man Ray returns to where SpongeBob and Patrick are, still under the effects of the orb. He turns the orb off, explains that he has genuinely become good, and gives SpongeBob his evil head as he walks away.

Patrick: MUH-MUH-MUH-MA-MUH-MUH-MA-MUH-MA! MUH-MUH-MUH-MA-MUH-MUH-MA-MUH-MA!

(SpongeBob finally sees Man Ray; he grabs onto Patrick in fear and joins in shuttering and shaking)

Both: MAN RAY! AHHHH!
(They hide behind a wall. Then they notice that Man Ray doesn't react.)
Patrick: Hey SpongeBob, how come he's not chasing us?
SpongeBob: Looks like he's frozen or something.
Patrick: (shuddering once again) FRUH-FRUH-FRUH-FRO-FRUH-FRUH-FRO-FRUH-FRO!

Trivia/Goofs

  • Man Ray is a parody of the Black Manta, the arch-villain of Aquaman, who Mermaid Man himself is in turn a parody of.
  • This is the first episode of the Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy series of episodes which does not revolve around Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy. They only appear in the first two minutes of the episode.
  • This is the first appearance of Man Ray.
  • Man Ray has become good at the end of this episode, but is still evil in the episode "Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy V". Much later on, however, in "Shuffleboarding", he is shown to be retired.
  • Man Ray was mentioned by SpongeBob in the original "Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy".

The "Villain Containment Chamber", where villains are kept in frozen prisons, is featured in the Mermalair level of Battle for Bikini Bottom. "Prawn", a villain exclusive to the game, is accidentally released from his containment, and must be defeated by SpongeBob.
