This is a list of the species that appear on SpongeBob SquarePants. Technically, many of these are not actually species, but other levels of biological naming.

Sponge

The SquarePants Family is in this species. The most notable is SpongeBob. The only other sponges that are not in the SquarePants family that have appeared are Girly Teengirl and the Drifter.

Technically, this is a phylum, not a species.

Cephalopods

Octopus

The Tentacles Family and most of the other cephalopods are in this species. The most notable is Squidward. Other octopi that appear are SquilliamSquilvia, possibly the members of Tentacle Acres, and some of the members of the Cephalopod Lodge. Different species of octopi make occasional appearances, such as a Mother Octopus and her children from Sailor Mouth, a hot dog vendor from Walking Small, and a dancer from Slimy Dancing.

Technically, this is an order, not a species.

Squid

The most notable example is Shelia Squid. Some squids, in addition to octopi, appeared in the episode Cephalopod Lodge because they are cephalopods. It is possible that the members of Tentacle Acres are also squids, but this has not been confirmed. Another squid appears in Jailbreak! as one of Plankton's inmates.

Ammonite

The only ammonites shown on SpongeBob appeared in the episodes SB-129 and Ugh, during the prehistoric parts of those episodes.

Crustaceans

Every species under this section is related by Class.

Crab

This is the species that Most of the Krabs Family is. The only members who are not are Pearl Krabs and Princess Pearl. Mr. Krabs is the most notable of the crabs in the Krabs family. Other crabs include, The Penny Pinchers, The Wise Old Crab and the other crabs from Nicktoons: Battle for Volcano Island and SpongeBob SquarePants featuring Nicktoons: Globs of Doom, Mr. Krabs' Double, the Yeti Krab from the future episode Yeti Krabs. Plankton made a Mr. Krabs Robot, which looks like a crab. Plankton also made a giant green robot crab suit that appeared in Nicktoons Unite! and had a cameo in Nicktoons: Battle For Volcano Island.

Technically, it is an infraorder, not a species.

Hermit Crab

Either the Sneaky Hermit or the hermit thief, if they are not the same crab, and the Victim Hermit.

Only two or three Hermit crabs have appeared in the SpongeBob Universe. The most notable is the Sneaky Hermit, which appeared in the game Lights, Camera, Pants! and may have appeared in the episode Life of Crime. However, that may have just been another hermit crab. The other crab also appeared in Life of Crime, he was a victim in a fake thievery on a show called Crustacean Crime Theater.

Technically, it is a superfamily, not a species.

Lobster

Only three lobsters have appeared in the SpongeBob Universe. The most notable is Larry the Lobster. The other lobsters are Federico the Waiter, which appeared in the game Employee of the Month, and the lobster who works at Fin Locker, which appeared in the PC version of the game The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie.

Shrimp

A shrimp makes a brief appearance in The Algae's Always Greener. The villainous Jumbo Shrimp could very well be a shrimp too.

Technically, this is a infraorder and and a suborder. The suborder is also the same for the prawn.

Brine Shrimp (Sea Monkey)

In the SpongeBob universe, these resemble actual monkeys. They appear in Not Normal and Plankton's Pet.

Technically, this is a genus, but is also considered a family because it is the only genus of its family.

The only prawn ever seen is Prawn, a villian from the Battle for Bikini Bottom and SpongeBob's Truth or Square video games.

Johnny Krill is the most notable of the species.

In BlackJack, krill are described as vermin, with Harold SquarePants saying "The only crime that ever happened at our house was the infestation of those worthless krill". 

There was also a Krill or some Crustation who appered in Pickles as a regular at the KK. Though he was never seen again.

Single-Celled Organisms

Plankton

Sheldon J. Plankton is classified under this species. Other plankton include the members of Plankton family who appeared in "Plankton's Army", Sheldon's grandmother who appeared in Gramma's Secret Recipe, Plankton's grandfather and other ancestors in One Coarse MealPlanktonamor from Dunces and Dragons, Dead Eye Plankton from Pest of the West, and Papa Plankton from the book Hooray for Dads!.

Amoeba

Notable amoeba seen in the series include Spot from Plankton's Pet, as well as numerous amoeba from Goo Goo Gas.

Technically, this is a genus.

Echinoderms

Starfish (Sea Star)

This species contains most of Patrick's family. The most notable is Patrick Star. The only other starfish that have appeared in the series besides the Starfish in Patrick's family are Janet and Marty from "I'm with Stupid", the starfish who mistakenly crowned Patrick king of Bikini Bottom in "Rule of Dumb", a few starfish at Shell City in The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie, and Patrick Not-Star from Hide and Then What Happens?.

Technically, this is a class, not a species.

Sea Urchin

The underwater equivalent of bugs/cockroaches. They appear in Nature Pants, Your Shoe's Untied, and Eek! An Urchin. A larger, talkative variety of sea urchin appears in Squidward's School For Grown-Ups.

Mollusk

This species is the underwater equivalent to cats. The most notable is Gary the Snail. Others include Snellie, Mrs. Puff's snail, the ally snails from "Have You Seen This Snail?", Mary the SnailMary's Ex-boyfriendthe Black SnailFoofieDan the Orange SnailDaniel the SnailDrake the SnailElderly SnailHaibi the SnailJerryLarry LucianoLary the SnailMiss TuffsyMuffsies the SnailPat the SnailPetey the SnailPrehistoric GarySpike the Bully SnailVictoria the Snail, and the Party Snails from Atlantis SquarePantis and What if SpongeBob Was Gone? The only slug that has appeared on the show is Gary's father, Sluggo. A saddened SpongeBob refers to Gary as a "lowly slug" in Shell Shocked.

Clam

Giant Clams can take the place of animals such as wolves, as they are sometimes shown howling (Texas) and attacking people (Tea at the Treedome). The most notable clam is Old Bluelip from the episode Clams. the other clams that have appeared on the show are the Giant clam from Tea at the Treedome, the clams from Texas, the clam from Porus Pockets, and the clams from No Free Rides.

Owl Clam

The underwater equivalent to birds, scallops resemble clams but are much smaller in size. A notable scallop is Junior from Rock-a-Bye Bivalve. Other scallops that have appeared are Mr. Krabs' Former Pet Scallop, the scallops that SpongeBob killed in To Love a Patty, and the scallops from One Krabs Trash.

Pearl Oyster

Clamu and her child

Clamu is a notable pearl oyster that performs at the Bikini Bottom Zoo, as shown in The Smoking Peanut. Oysters can also sometimes be used as food, such as in Squidville, where Patrick is mentioned to have eaten fried oyster skins.

Snow Mullusk

Abominable Snow Mullusk

A mythical (fictional in reality) creature that attacks and eats sailors. The Abominable Snow Mollusk is in this species. It might technically be a cephalopod because it looks more like one then the other mollusks in this list, but this is unconfirmed.

Mother Sea Whelk and Her children

A Whelk is a type of sea snail. Appearing in Whelk Attack as big ravenous beasts, but later turn out to be small and friendly after SpongeBob helps cure them of a disease.

Worms are the underwater equivalent to dogs. The worms that appear on the show are Mr. DoodlesRexGuard WormWorm from AppleworldJan the WormKenney the WormMax the WormMrs. Squiggles, and the Unnamed Worm from Karate Choppers.

A large worm species that is feared by the people of Bikini Bottom, as it eats everything in its path and leaves destruction in its wake. 

Flatworm (Tapeworm)

Two Flatworms have been seen on the show, Tapey from Pest of the West and the Primitive Tapeworm from SB-129.

While in reality this is just an expression for catchy music, in the SpongeBob universe it is a species that inhabits the heads of people who become too obsessed with music. Appearing in an episode of the same name, an earworm infects SpongeBob and later Squidward.

Spotted Glistening Meadow Worm

A worm that appears in Pet or Pests. It is noted to be a highly valuable species.

A peanut-like species of worm, unlike its real-life counterpart. They appear in Growth Spout, as pets owned by Mrs. Puff.

Madame Hagfish

Madame Hagfish is a notable member of this species, appearing in Curse of the Hex.

Technically, it is family, but it is the only one in its order and its class.

Nudibranch

In the SpongeBob universe, nudibranches resemble small cute fish, which can evolve into huge, monstrous and dangerous creatures, Puffy Fluffy being a notorious example. In reality, nudibranches are sea slugs and look nothing like the aforementioned.

Numerous leeches are briefly seen in Prehibernation Week, along with a place called the Leech Farm which was only mentioned. An Ancestor of Gary that was a leech appeared in Dunces and Dragons.

Eel

Eels occasionally appear in the series. This includes the brown eel that appears in Your Shoe's Untied. They were mentioned in the episode Sailor Mouth when the game Eels and Escalators is played.

Seen in Cephalopod Lodge, as an enemy of the cephalopods. The initiation of the lodge would involve a potential member to be attacked by the eel.

Nematode

Worm-like creatures that are known for damaging buildings. They appear in Home Sweet Pineapple and Best Day Ever.

Technically, this is a phylum.

Poppy Puff is the most notable organism in this species. The only other known pufferfish are her deceased husband, Mr. Puff, his ancestor Polene Puff, and the Unnamed Pufferfish at Shell City in The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie.

Meep!

Anchovies, in the SpongeBob universe, are known for making sounds like "meep", though can speak english as well. They are notorious around the Krusty Krab for gathering in large schools for food, nearly destroying the restaurant in the pilot episode. 

Shark

A family of sharks is seen in SpongeGuard on Duty. Notable sharks include Sharkey Two-Times from SpongeBob Diner Dash 2, Seymour Scales from SpongeBob's Boating Bash, and Sergeant Sam Roderick from Mrs. Puff, You're Fired. A shark also appears in Kenny the Cat, being ridden by its titular character.

A hammerhead shark makes a quick appearance in Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy (in the episode of the same name). Gill Hammerstein from Lights, Camera, Pants! is also this species.

This includes the Frogfish from The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie. Like actual frogfish, it uses its tongue to attract food, SpongeBob and Patrick in this case.

Jellyfish are commonly known in the series to represent bees, due to their stings and jelly. There are known to be Queen Jellyfish just like bees, however there are King Jellyfish as well. The species are involved in the practice of jellyfishing. While pink is the most common color of a jellyfish, they can come in different physical appearances and species.
