Overtime during development, developers change designs, features and layouts of a level or character. They may remove these before the final release of the game or sometimes even leave the content inside of the game's files, unused. Sometimes they can be added back into the game via hacking or a cheat device like Action Replay or GameShark. These are what people call "beta elements."

Battle for Bikini Bottom

Console releases

  1. General:
    • Glove World was a planned level, according to an alternate (and unused) pause menu and some concept art.
    • Golden Spatulas could simply be collected in the overworld.
    • The only two music tracks are the APM songs "You're Nice" and "War Blowers", which the game seems to cycle between. The volume of the music is also very inconsistent.
    • It makes two different blinking sounds whenever something lands.War
    • The shiny objects resembled crystals in a few prerelease videos.
    • The prerelease videos shown also lacked special effects and sounds.
    • SpongeBob's sundae from the season 2 episode "Something Smells" was going to be a power up that allows SpongeBob, Patrick, and possibly Sandy run faster and break stone tikis.

    • SpongeBob's running animation is faster.
    • The Bubble Bowl only destroys one Tiki at a time.
    • There are no taxi gates.
    • The explosions the robots make when you defeat them are different.
    • Sandy's lasso makes a swish sound.
    • The HUD is different with different graphics (such as shiny objects being a purple box, 2D underwear, 2D golden spatulas, and an unknown anchor).
    • Buttons said "PUSH" on them instead of the hand.
    • The tikis aren't animated.
    • There are Ham-Mers in SpongeBob's kitchen.
    • There are white urchins on the rocks in Jellyfish Fields.
    • Shiny Object clams were actual donation boxes.
    • The layout of the furniture in SpongeBob's house is different.
    • The stone tikis are different.
    • Squidward is wearing his Krusty Krab employee's hat and is holding his clarinet.
    • Bikini Bottom has a lot more sand
    • Toll gates had a clam shell with "STOP" slapped onto them.
    • The hint signs were would've been replaced by a picture of Gary.
    • The prompt to enter the Krusty Krab is small, white, and isn't in a box. The unused Patrick's Dream has text like this when it says to enter Patrick's Mind.
    • The Krusty Krab is larger, has no flags, and is textured differently.
    • The thunder tiki and the flying tiki had a completely different design.
    • The up and down arrows in the pause menu screen were going to be pineapples instead of Jellyfish.
    • The Cruise Bubble has no radar screen.
    • There is no death animation. The screen just fades in and out when you die.
    • Instead of a glove, there is a green arrow that points to objects you can lasso.
  2. Characters & Enemies:
    • Hans would have came from the top instead of the right.
    • There's an extra female fish intended to be for the Goo Lagoon level.
    • A textureless worm that resembles Mr. Doodles can be found and placed in-game, but the animations and collision are broken.

    • SpongeBob originally used a regular helmet for the Bubble Bash.
    • SpongeBob can be seen not smiling in some screenshots.
    • Patrick has a different walk cycle.
    • Patrick primary attack would've a headbutt instead of his belly bump.
    • Larry is at the top of the slide instead of Mermaid Man
    • Sandy would originally slide on her back during the mountain levels instead of using a shellboard.
    • Unused speech for when Patrick encountered Slick and when Sandy encountered Arf.
    • Robo-Squidward can be seen in concept art that he would've also been a planned boss.
    • Robo-SpongeBob Was Going to have a Third Part.
    • The monsoon robot was originally going to walk instead of fly.
    • Bosses health meters were completely different from the final version.
    • An unused animation for the Arf when it gets lassoed by Sandy.
    • The Tubelet enemies originally had a laser.
  3. Robo-Sandy:

    • Robot Sandy's health meter is different.
  4. Industrial Park:
    • Originally intended to have three chucks a button to push and a bridge.
    • Robot Patrick's sound effects were missing.
  5. Kelp Forest:
    • Was intended to be set in the daytime.
  6. Patrick's Dream:
    • It was intended to have a whole dessert-themed level for Patrick's Dream instead of Patrick just standing in the middle of nowhere. The level is incomplete, skybox is missing and some enemies do not function, and can be loaded into the game.
  7. Chum Bucket Lab:
    • In the final boss fight against Robo-SpongeBob, there was originally supposed to be a third segment where the Robot gets anchor arms and is fought directly (it's shown in the cutscene, but the arms instead deflate). The robot also has a pair of legs and wears a speedo as well.

    • The extras have been rearranged.
  1. Characters & Extras:

    • SpongeBob and Patrick had additional costumes that were cut from the final game.
    • Patty Wagon had a different handling and its damaged look looked different.
    • There was going to be an unused level in the beta where you would save Goofy Goober. It was cut in the final either because it was time consuming, had nothing to do with the movie plot or it was just turned into Sundae Driving.
    • Some vehicles and their colors had a different design.
    • SpongeBob's Goofy Goober Guitar design was different.
  1. No Cheese!:

  1. Bubble Blowing Baby Hunt:
    • A lot of the textures, mainly the "safe zone floor" texture, was repeated. The bar had a purple texture applied to it.

    • Many breakables weren't present.
    • The button to activate the door was moved.
    • The bar had a purple checkered texture applied.
    • The level was also missing extra details and decals.

Gameboy Advance releases

General:

  1. Main Menu:
  • The bubbles in the prototype are animated and scroll to the top right, while in the final it's just a static image. The shading on SpongeBob's pants is also different, the bamboo poles in the background are darker, and the colors are more dithered.
  1. Difficulty Selection:
  • SpongeBob on the difficulty selection screen was in a pirate outfit in the prototype. It was changed to generic clip-art of SpongeBob in the final. The sign also had a thicker shadow.

  1. Continue Screen:
  • A proper "continue" window wasn't implemented yet, so it's just the pause window. Exit continues the game, and resume ends it.

  1. Dialog Box

The prototype uses a small, white page indentation as a continue prompt when the final uses a more fitting A button. Additionally, in the prototype, the continue prompt will not appear after a character's dialog is finished.

  1. Thug Tug Thug

The Thug Tug Thug resembles a thug seen in the movie in the prototype. In the final game, he was changed to a generic green thug. The reason for this change is unknown.

  1. King Neptune

Some of the game's dialogue is different in the prototype. Most of it is a change of punctuation.

  1. Early Dialogue

Some of the game's dialogue is different in the prototype. Most of it is a change of punctuation.

  1. Level Differences
  • Management Material:

The left side of the pit was changed, probably so that the player could use Patrick's simpler gliding ability rather than forcing the player to use the speed boost ability and jump midair with it.

  1. Patrick's Rock
  • Patrick's rock has a thinner outline in the prototype.

  1. Boss Battles

In the prototype, boss battles have a 600 second time limit. This time limit was removed in the final, presumably to make the battles less difficult.
