Following SpongeBob SquarePants characters make most of the appearances during the series.
Main
| SpongeBob SquarePants (voice of Tom Kenny) is the main protagonist and the eponymous character of the Nickelodeon animated comedy series of the same name. He was designed by marine biologist and animator Stephen Hillenburg. SpongeBob's a childish, joyful, eccentric sea sponge who lives in a pineapple in the underwater city of Bikini Bottom. He works as a fry cook at The Krusty Krab, a job which he is exceptionally skilled at. SpongeBob lacks a lot of knowledge and is a constant annoyance to those around him (especially Squidward Tentacles), but he is very good natured. He appears in all of the episodes in the series.
He is a sea sponge but is drawn to resemble a kitchen sponge, being rectangular and bright yellow. In earlier episodes, he is wider near the top and gets skinnier going further down, but in more recent episodes, he is a more regular square. SpongeBob has large blue eyes, a long, slightly curves nose, a large mouth with prominent front buck teeth, and dimples with three freckles on each cheek. He typically wears a white shirt with a red tie, black leather shoes with shoelaces, and brown rectangular pants with a black belt, the entire outfit is sometimes referred to as his "pants", hence his name. |
| Patrick Star (voice of Bill Fagerbakke) is SpongeBob's best friend. He is unintelligent, pleasant starfish. Patrick is portrayed as overweight, eating pretty much anything, including ice cream and Krabby Patties. His is lazy, and is unable to hold down a job. He is also unmannerly, unintelligent, and generally ignorant, although on rare occasions, he shows signs of genius. He enjoys bubble blowing, jellyfishing, like his friend SpongeBob. He resides under a rock, next to his neighbor Squidward, and two doors down from his best friend SpongeBob. In Season 1, due to unsteady animation, his eyebrows were thin and in the shape of a couple of Ms. Beginning in Season 2, his eyebrows were slightly thicker and shaped like Zs. In several episodes, Patrick is shown to variously have a full set of teeth, a single tooth, and sometimes none at all. Patrick's intelligence is generally low, although it varies from episode to episode. |
| Squidward Tentacles SpongeBob and Patrick. Squidward is a cephalopod. His species is octopus according to the series creators, despite his name containing Squidward. He lives in a house shaped like an Easter Island Head (Moai head). He works as the cashier at the Krusty Krab, a job he dislikes. SpongeBob works along with Squidward at the Krusty Krab. Squidward is a selfish individual and displays an unjustified air of superiority. He also has over 500 self-portraits and is delusional about his talents (such as playing the clarinet) though nobody around him considers him to be very good. The series' animators made Squidward with six tentacles, believing that giving him the eight tentacles of an octopus has made him look too burdened. Squidward's personality is grumpy, angus and of course, miserable. In spite of this, he is still one of the most intelligent character, and out of the ten major characters, he can be categorized as the most educated ones, along with Sandy and Gary. He has a sarcastic attitude and sees others as uncivilized morons, while failing to accept his own personal shortcomings. Squidward sees himself as misunderstood and unappreciated, blaming society for his failures. He is annoyingly pretentious in his pursuit of fame and is either unwilling or unable to spot talent and creativity, even belittling it. He lauds "cultivated taste" and accepted standards. In Artist Unknown, he insists that his pupil SpongeBob "show his method", even when it's painfully clear that SpongeBob has artistic genius. In Bubblestand, he belittles SpongeBob's brilliant bubble-blowing. In Squidward's childhood, he had to sit near the garbage cans at lunch, as revealed in Boating Buddies. When he was an adult, he was part of the Krusty Krab along with Jim and later, after Jim quit, with a fry cook whose name is yet to be revealed. One day, he was planting a garden and a pineapple fell on him and destroyed his garden. A sponge named SpongeBob SquarePants moved into that pineapple and Squidward has been grumpy ever since. See his antagonistic side, leisure, and near-death experiences sections for more of his biography. |
| Eugene H. Krabs is a sea krab who's the owner of the Krusty Krab as well as the employer of both SpongeBob and Squidward. He is extremely greedy, selfish, and quite literally obsessed with money itself. Mr. Krabs is mostly respected by SpongeBob, while Squidward tends to loathe him. Mr. Krabs' greed in the series is exaggerated with him often anthropomorphizing money. He will do almost anything to obtain money or not lose it no matter how small the amount, like a dime. usually with no regard to the safety or well-being of others or even himself. His arch-nemesis and business rival is Plankton, who was his best friend in their childhood but now constantly attempts to steal the Krabby Patty Secret Formula. Mr. Krabs has a daughter, a sperm whale named Pearl. |
| Gary is SpongeBob's loyal pet, although his behavior in several aspects resembles a snail. As revealed in "Rule of Dumb", Gary is the rightful king of the city of Bikini Bottom and is related to Patrick after been shown in a chart of Gary's family tree. Gary is shown to be very bored and massively cheeky, although, being a pet, he lacks the communication skills to convey this. In Gary's dream in "Sleepy Time", he is able to talk, has a humanoid body, and resides in a massive library full of books. Gary is an intelligent, fully domesticated snail. His intelligence shines through in the fact that he has more intelligent solutions to SpongeBob's dilemmas than SpongeBob himself. Gary tends to disagree with Spongebob generally shown to find SpongeBob oblivious, ignorant and annoying, yet still willingly tolerates him (probably due to the fact that SpongeBob takes care of him), and in many episodes, it is shown that he cares a lot about SpongeBob. In Rule of Dumb, it is revealed that Gary is the rightful king of Bikini Bottom and Patrick's cousin, although interestingly snails and starfish are very far off from each other on the evolutionary line. In Have You Seen This Snail?, Gary runs away from SpongeBob when he fails to feed him because SpongeBob was addicted to the official Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy Paddle Ball Set. Gary wanders aimlessly in search of a home, venturing into the dangerous inner city, until he is found by an elderly woman who pampers and overfeeds him, and renames him Ms. Tuffsy. However, he eventually discovers her horrible secret: she is a snail killer (he is told this by another, half-dead snail in a parody of Hansel and Gretel, along with possibly one hundred empty snail shells he finds in a closet)! Gary narrowly escapes from her, and upon learning of SpongeBob's desperate efforts to find him, realizes that SpongeBob does indeed love him and has learned the error of his ways, and goes back to him. |
| Sandra "Sandy" Cheeks (voice of Carolyn Lawrence) is a squirrel and is one of SpongeBob's best friends. She was born in the state of Texas. A native of Texas, Sandy is notable for her Texan characteristics and knowledge of science . Sandy comes from the state of Texas, she was actually born in Houston, Texas but she exhibits many characteristics of a stereotypical "cowgirl" character by going to every city in Texas. She speaks with a heavy southern accent, and uses typical southern slang words and phrases. She is very fond of her homeland and its culture, as most notably seen in the episode "Texas." Sandy is one of the most intelligent and level-headed characters on the show.Sandy is one of the strongest characters because of her knowledge of "Karate" and breaks the "Krusty Krab" in the episode "Texas."
Her hobbies include, among others, karate and extreme sports. She and SpongeBob also enjoying going to Goo Lagoon, where Sandy enjoys weightlifting and surfing along with her other friend, Larry the Lobster. |
| Sheldon J. Plankton is a copepod and arch nemesis in the series. He operates a struggling restaurant called the Chum Bucket, located directly across the street from the Krusty Krab. His primary goal in the series is to steal the Krabby Patty secret formula and put Mr. Krabs out of business. Plankton succeeds at stealing the recipe in the movie, but his goal of world domination is thwarted by SpongeBob. In "Friend or Foe," it was revealed that Mr. Krabs and Plankton were once best friends, but a dispute over the Krabby Patty recipe ended their friendship. Plankton has spent a long period of time trying to destroy the Krusty Krab by stealing the Krabby Patty formula, a franchise owned and operated by Mr. Krabs. He's married to a computer named Karen. He always comes short of getting the Krabby Patty formula. Plankton's best friend from birth was his future rival Mr. Krabs! This history was revealed in Friend or Foe. Plankton and Krabs were considered outcasts by other kids because Krabs was poor and Plankton was a nerd. When they discovered that money could bring them out of their poverty, they decided to make money selling hamburger patties, and set up a mini-restaurant in the local dump. At first, their burgers weren't successful; the first of their patties was tried by Old Man Jenkins, who was knocked out by the contaminated burger. Plankton started complaining about how Jenkins had been old and not able to handle the patty. Offended by this, Krabs tried to take the recipe from Plankton to improve upon. Plankton wanted to do this himself, but he only ended up with the corner of the recipe, which read: "And a pinch of chum." Plankton stormed out of the restaurant, and went to create his own recipe, using only his memory, the corner of the recipe, and science. At school, Plankton tried to sell his chum burgers in a chum bucket and failed, when Krabs succeeded with his Krabby Patties, which he had created by accident when Plankton had slammed the door. Ingredients fell in the patty batter, thus creating the patty. Plankton later named his restaurant the Chum Bucket, after the secret ingredient of the original unsuccessful patty recipe. Mr. Krabs named his restaurant the Krusty Krab. To this very day, Plankton has been single-mindedly obsessed with obtaining the Krabby Patty formula and running the Krusty Krab out of business, often going to incredible and often ridiculous lengths to do so. |

| Mrs. Puff is a paranoid blowfish whose occupation is to teach her students driving lessons at her boating school. SpongeBob has attended the school ever since its opening, and has failed his final driving exam countless times, often injuring Mrs. Puff and/or damaging the school in the process. Mrs. Puff is very paranoid, mean and erratic, and has had a history of mental instability. In "No Free Rides", it is implied that she has had to move to another town and start a new life with a new name in the past. While this is mostly caused by SpongeBob's antics, it is possible that some of it is caused by loneliness and sexual frustration she suffers from after her husband was killed by humans and made into a lamp. At the beginning of the series, Mrs. Puff seems to not be so optimistic towards SpongeBob and actually treats him like a close friend, save for a few moments when SpongeBob crashes during the course. However, as the series has progressed, Mrs. Puff seems to have developed an intense hatred for him, and can even get a fit of mental instability by just looking at him. This could be because of the fact that SpongeBob becomes more troublesome as the series progresses, and has caused Mrs. Puff great trouble lately. Her thoughts and fear about SpongeBob cause her to think that she was giving SpongeBob a driving test even though they are not at school. This occasion happened in Krusty Love. |
| Pearl Krabs is the daughter of Eugene H. Krabs. She is a whale, which means Mr. Krabs was once married, and her mother was a whale. She is revealed to be sixteen years old in Whale of a Birthday. Pearl is a teenage girl who interested in anything a normal teenage girl would be interested in. She sometimes acts like a crybaby to Mr. Krabs in episodes such as Squeaky Boots, Whale of a Birthday, The Slumber Party, etc. She also gets angry easily when annoyed. She will cry when she dosen't get what she wants |
| Karen Plankton is Plankton's wife, a Mark II UNIVAC. She is the main computer system of Plankton's lab, and is often the source of his plots (even though Plankton takes all the credit). Karen usually manifests on the large-screen computer in Plankton's lab, but sometimes acts through a portable wheeled computer. She was first shown in Plankton!, although in her first appearance she was simply Plankton's talking computer and would not be established as his wife until later on. In the episode Friend or Foe, it was discovered that Karen was a Security System before Plankton married her. Karen and Plankton's relationship is a very troubled one. Plankton sometimes does not consider her his true soulmate, and explains to her in Enemy In-Law that W.I.F.E. stands for "Wired Integrated Female Electroencephalograph". The two frequently argue, and Karen is often very bossy, sarcastic, and cynical to her husband, having nagging software installed in her. She also thinks Plankton's first name, Sheldon, is funny, as shown in Plankton's Army, which is why Plankton had to unplug her after she kept making fun of his name, Sheldon, even when he told her to stop. Karen is often indifferent to her husband's plots to defeat Mr. Krabs and often shows very half-hearted dedication to his plans for domination over others. Despite their differences, Plankton has said that marrying Karen was the greatest thing that ever happened to him, the second being his Evil Plan Z succeeding. Unlike Plankton, however, Karen shows some degree of dedication for her husband. This is evident whenever she appears, often showing it in the form of assistance in Plankton's schemes, consoling him whenever he's down, and even crying upon Plankton when he told her what W.I.F.E. stands for. It is most likely that Plankton either ignores, or cannot register the acts of kindness that Karen often performs for him, resulting in their various feuds. |
| Mermaid Man is a underwater human superhero who lives at Shady Shoals Rest Home with his sidekick Barnacle Boy. In present day episodes, he is depicted as an old, and sometimes senile man with dandruff. Many of his main enemys include Man Ray, the Dirty Bubble and many more. Mermaid Man is SpongeBob's favorite superhero with SpongeBob almost always chasing for an autograph.Spongebob and Patrick are always following them around and they say they are there biggest friends. Mermaids feelings to SpongeBob vary, in some episodes, Mermaid Man is eager to run away from Spongebob, in other episodes, he is nice to SpongeBob or he can be quite mean to him. Mermaid Man has been depicted as young in some episodes, as young person he wears the same clothes but is much taller. Mermaid Man is also a parody of Aquaman off the Dc comics. Recently, the main voice of Mermaid Man, Ernest Borgnine, passed away. |
| Barnacle Boy, along with Mermaid Man is a semi-retired superhero that lives at Shady Shoals Rest Home. He dresses up like a sailor with a sailor hat, a sailor bandana around his neck, red top, black underpants and blue gloves. He most likely Patrick's favourite superhero due to Patrick mainly dresses up like him. Unlike Mermaid Man, Barnacle Boy is smart and tries to the more sensible thing. Barnacle Boy's friendship with Mermaid Man can be a very stressed at times, in Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy V, Barnacle Boy walked over to the dark side just because Mermaid Man orded him a kiddy meal for him at the Krusty Krab. Barnacle Boy states that he doesn't like being called Barnacle Boy, but instead, would prefer to be called Barnacle Man and he sometimes calls Mermaid Man an "Old coot." Barnacle Boy is a superhero of Bikini Bottom and the sidekick of Mermaid Man. He can be very cranky at times. He lives at the Shady Shoals Rest Home and he and Mermaid Man once retired and Spongebob and Patrick got them out of retirement. |
| The Flying Dutchman is the main ghost in Bikini Bottom. His main job is scaring the residents of Bikini Bottom and making them believe in ghosts. The Flying Dutchman may prehaps be friends with SpongeBob due to SpongeBob letting him stay at his house on more then one occasion. It is revealed in Squidward the Unfriendly Ghost that the Flying Dutchmans body used as display as a display in a Gift Shop when he died and that's why he haunts the seven seas because he was never put to rest. It is also revealed that The Flying Dutchman has been the knot champion for the last 5000 years. He is said to be more than 1,000 years old. |
| Ugly Man Ray is the main villain in of Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy. When Mermaid Man caught Man Ray, he confined him to a frozen chamber of tartar sauce and placed a tickle belt on him. Some time afterward, SpongeBob and Patrick released him and he eventually turned good due to the tickle belts effect. Unlike Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy, Man Ray dosen't appear to age. In Back to the Past he looked exactly the same as he did in Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy III. Man Ray is also a parody of Aquamans main enemy; Black Manta. Man Ray does not hold any special powers like any of the other villian but is a very skilled close combat fighter. He has also been partners with several villians, notably Plankton and the Dirty Bubble |
| A bodybuilder lobster who always works as a lifeguard at Goo Lagoon or just working out at a gym. |
| Squilliam is basically Squidwards old high school rival. In almost every episode Squilliam is in, he is either seen being better at Squidward at something or teasing Squidward because he is so much better. Many times, Squilliam is viewed by Squidward is a great big snob who gets all the luck.
In a few episodes, Squilliam ends up getting humiliated by Squidward such as in the episodes Band Geeks and House Fancy. In episodes like Squilliam Returns although, he is seen with a crowd right behind him follwing his every step. |
