The SquarePants family is a family of sponges who were descended from the primitive sponge as well as SpongeGar, who discovered fire along with Patar and Squog. The primitive sponges lived in what was most likely Bikini Bottom. The further history of the SquarePants family is unknown until the nineteenth century; somewhere in the meantime, the SquarePants family left the area (if they lived there to begin), until SpongeBuck SquarePants settled in Bikini Gulch, now known as Bikini Bottom, as seen in "Pest of the West."

SpongeBuck's descendants still live in Bikini Bottom, the most notable being SpongeBob SquarePants.

Modern era[]

SpongeBob SquarePants[]

SpongeBob SquarePants

SpongeBob SquarePants

SpongeBob SquarePants is the title character of the series. He appears in every episode, except for "The Algae's Always Greener," in which his alternate-universe counterpart appears instead of him.

He is the only known child of Margaret and Harold SquarePants. He is also the cousin of Larry, Stanley, BlackJack, and Todd, a grandson of Grandpa and Grandma SquarePants, a nephew of Sherm and Blue, a descendant of SpongeBuck, Primitive Sponge, and SpongeGar, one of SpongeTron's ancestors. In the future, he will be a grandfather.

Harold SquarePants[]

HaroldSquarePants

Harold SquarePants

Main article: Harold SquarePants

Harold SquarePants is SpongeBob's father, the son of Grandma and Grandpa SquarePants; uncle of Stanley, BlackJack, Larry, and Todd SquarePants; brother of Sherm and Blue SquarePants; Margaret's husband; a descendant of SpongeBuck, Primitive Sponge, and SpongeGar; and one of SpongeTron's ancestors. Harold SquarePants has brown eyes, a mustache, and wears thick glasses. He is round, wears a white shirt, and brown pants pulled up to his stomach.

Harold debuted in "Home Sweet Pineapple," where he and Margaret came to pick up their son after nematodes ate SpongeBob's pineapple house. In this episode, when SpongeBob is in his parents' car, he says, "Good-bye Bikini Bottom!” which indicates that SpongeBob's parents do not live in Bikini Bottom. They later appear in "Culture Shock" as they watched the Krusty Krab Talent Show, and in "No Free Rides," where Harold SquarePants kisses Mrs. Puff's hand and gives his son a boatmobile for "passing" his driver's test. In "Driven to Tears" they seem sad that SpongeBob doesn't have his license, saying how, "even Patrick has a license." His name is revealed in "BlackJack" when his wife says, "I told you, Harold, [the broken picture frame seen earlier in the episode] was the fumigator's fault." In "New Digs," they visit SpongeBob while he is living at the Krusty Krab. Harold is voiced by Tom Kenny. Unlike SpongeBob, he looks more like a natural sponge since he has a round head. He also appears in the book Hooray for Dads!.

Margaret SquarePants[]

Driven to Tears 32

Margaret SquarePants

Main article: Margaret SquarePants

Margaret SquarePants (née BubbleBottom) is Harold's wife, SpongeBob's mother; daughter-in-law of Grandpa and Grandma SquarePants; sister-in-law of Captain Blue and Sherm; the aunt of Larry, Todd, BlackJack, and Stanley; and one of SpongeTron's ancestors. She has black hair and is dressed in a purple matchbox dress and has a pearl necklace. She debuted in "Home Sweet Pineapple," where she and her husband came to pick up SpongeBob after nematodes ruined his pineapple house. In this episode, when SpongeBob is in his parents' car, Harold says, "Good-bye Bikini Bottom!” which indicates that SpongeBob's parents do not live in Bikini Bottom. They later appeared in "Culture Shock" as they watched the Krusty Krab Talent Show, and in "No Free Rides," where they give their son a boat mobile for "passing" his driver's test. In "Driven to Tears" they seem sad that SpongeBob does not have his license, saying how "even Patrick has a license." Margaret is voiced by Sirena Irwin. She also appears, for the only time without her husband to date, in "Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy IV," convincing her son to admit the mistake he has made in shrinking virtually everyone in Bikini Bottom. Unlike SpongeBob, both his parents are more like natural sponges since they have round heads. In "Whelk Attack," SpongeBob states that her maiden name was BubbleBottom, and implies he had told Sandy this some time earlier.

Grandpa SquarePants[]

Main article: Grandpa SquarePants

Grandpa SquarePants

Grandpa SquarePants was the father of Harold, Sherm, and Blue SquarePants, and was Grandma SquarePants' husband. He was also the paternal grandfather of SpongeBob, Todd, BlackJack, Stanley, and possibly Larry; Margaret's father-in-law; a descendant of SpongeBuck, Primitive Sponge, and SpongeGar; one of SpongeTron's ancestors. He is voiced by Tom Kenny.

He very much resembles SpongeBob's square shape. He is first mentioned in the episode "Rock Bottom," and is depicted in SpongeBob's mind in "The Sponge Who Could Fly." He is known for his wise sayings, which include "If we were meant to fly, we had have propellers on our heads or jet engines on our backs." ("The Sponge Who Could Fly") and "Never run for a bus, especially one that's going up at a 90-degree angle." ("Rock Bottom").

Grandma SquarePants[]

Main article: Grandma SquarePants

Grandma SquarePants

Grandma SquarePants is the widow of Grandpa SquarePants, the mother of Harold, Sherm, and Captain Blue SquarePants. She is also the paternal grandmother of SpongeBob, Todd, BlackJack, Stanley, and possibly Larry; Margaret's mother-in-law; and one of SpongeTron's ancestors. She was voiced by Marion Ross before she retired from voice acting.

Grandma SquarePants tends to dote on her grandchild.[2] According to the book Camp SpongeBob, SpongeBob was always sent to her house during the summertime. Grandma SquarePants lovingly treats her grandson as a baby whenever he visits and does stereotypical Grandma-like things for him, such as making gingerbread men, chocolate chip cookies, and homemade sweaters with metaphorical love in every stitch. Unlike SpongeBob, she is round in shape and brownish, much like an actual sea sponge, and her son Harold. She also appears in the video game Employee of the Month, in which the player can visit her in her house. She has also treated Patrick like one of her own grandchildren. She reappears in "BlackJack," "The Abrasive Side," and "Pet Sitter Pat."

Captain Blue SquarePants[]

Uncle Capt'nBlueSquarePants

Blue SquarePants

Captain Blue SquarePants is a son of Grandma and Grandpa SquarePants. He is the brother of Harold and Sherm SquarePants; the uncle of SpongeBob, Blackjack, Todd, Stanley, and possibly Larry; a brother-in-law of Margaret, and a descendant of SpongeBuck, Primitive Sponge, and SpongeGar. He is round, light orange wears a blue cap, and has a gray beard. Captain Blue is a retired police captain who lives next to his nephew BlackJack, despite considering him to be a dangerous person. He was voiced by Garnett Sailor. In the episode "BlackJack," SpongeBob tells him that he needs help from him to save his parents from BlackJack, but Blue offers little assistance due to his retirement. He enjoys drinking Clam Tomato Chowder Juice and listening to classical music with his record player. He has referred to SpongeBob as "Little Bobby" or "Bobby."

Sherm SquarePants[]

Main article: Sherm SquarePants
Sherm

Sherm SquarePants

Sherm SquarePants is the brother of Harold and Blue; a son of Grandma and Grandpa SquarePants; Stanley's father; the uncle of SpongeBob, BlackJack, Todd, and possibly Larry; a brother-in-law of Margaret; and a descendant of SpongeBuck, Primitive Sponge, and SpongeGar. Sherm was first mentioned in the episode "Krab Borg"; he was also mentioned in "Nicktoons: Battle for Volcano Island." In the episode "Stanley S. SquarePants," Sherm sent his son, Stanley to live with SpongeBob since Sherm was fed up with his clumsiness. He is seen in this photo in "Pest of the West," depicting his talent of fitting a watermelon up his nose. He has a similar square shape to his father, his son, and to his nephews SpongeBob and Todd.

Larry[]

Larry is the cousin of SpongeBob, and the nephew of Harold and Margaret. Mainly because his surname has never been stated, whether he is the son of one of Harold or Margaret's sibling is undetermined. If he is the son of one of Harold's siblings, this would make him a cousin of Stanley, Todd, and BlackJack; a nephew of Blue and Sherm; a grandson of Grandpa and Grandma SquarePants; and a descendant of SpongeBuck, Primitive Sponge, and SpongeGar. He is mentioned in the video game Operation Krabby Patty, after Plankton's attempt to kidnap Gary causes confusion to SpongeBob thinking he kidnapped his cousin Larry instead of his pet snail, as Plankton did not know Gary's name.

Todd SquarePants[]

Todd SquarePants

Todd SquarePants is the cousin of SpongeBob, Stanley, BlackJack, and possibly Larry; a nephew of Blue, Sherm, Harold, and Margaret; a grandson of Grandpa and Grandma SquarePants; and a descendant of SpongeBuck, Primitive Sponge, and SpongeGar. He appeared in the Story Reader book, The Never-Ending Stay. He was to stay in SpongeBob's house forever, but he left in the ending.

BlackJack[]

CousinBlackJack

BlackJack SquarePants

Main article: BlackJack (character)

BlackJack is the cousin of SpongeBob, Stanley, Todd, and possibly Larry; a nephew of Blue, Sherm, Harold, and Margaret; a grandson of Grandpa and Grandma SquarePants, and a descendant of SpongeBuck, Primitive Sponge, and SpongeGar. He beat up SpongeBob when they were young. Later in life, he was sent to prison for littering, where he somehow shrunk to the size of a shoe. He appears in the episode "BlackJack," where upon his release, his aunt and uncle Harold and Margaret hold a party to welcome him back to society. However, SpongeBob believes that BlackJack had kidnapped his parents, and tracks them to BlackJack's house. Harold explains to SpongeBob that BlackJack has learned his lesson and renounced his criminal ways, besides his unexplained shrinking. He is voiced by John DiMaggio.

Stanley S. SquarePants[]

Stanley S

Stanley S. SquarePants

Stanley S. SquarePants is Sherm's son; the cousin of SpongeBob, BlackJack, Todd, and possibly Larry; a nephew of Blue, Harold, and Margaret; a grandson of Grandpa and Grandma SquarePants; and a descendant of SpongeBuck, Primitive Sponge, and SpongeGar. He appeared in the episode which bears his name. Sherm sent him to SpongeBob because Stanley could not keep a job, and everything he touched would break. SpongeBob attempts to find Stanley's purpose in life. However, Stanley's clumsy attributes continue to cause problems. While working at the Krusty Krab, SpongeBob constantly took the blame for Stanley's mistakes. When the truth was revealed, Mr. Krabs resolved to send Stanley to rival business, the Chum Bucket, in order to sabotage it. Despite Chum Bucket owner Plankton believing hiring SpongeBob's blood relative would be advantageous, Krabs' plan succeeds, and Stanley accidentally causes the destruction of the Chum Bucket almost immediately upon entering.

SpongeBrian, SpongeKevin, and SpongeCarl[]

SpongeBrian-SpongeKevin-SpongeCarl

SpongeBrian, SpongeKevin, and SpongeCarl

SpongeBrian, SpongeKevin, and SpongeCarl are the nephews of SpongeBob; the first cousins once removed of BlackJack, Todd, Stanley, and possibly Larry; the grandsons of Harold and Margaret; the grandnephews of Blue and Sherm; the great-grandsons of Grandma and Grandpa SquarePants; and the descendants of SpongeBuck, Primitive Sponge, and SpongeGar. They appeared in the comic My Nephews Are Coming to Visit. They are known to be tough, bigger, and teens. When the nephews visit their SpongeBob, they then wreck his house, causing SpongeBob ideas in order to get them out.

SpongeBob's Great-Grandmother[]

In "Gramma's Secret Recipe," Plankton pretends to be SpongeBob's great-grandmother in order to steal the secret recipe.

Ancestors[]

Primitive Sponge[]

Main article: Primitive Sponge
Primitive SpongeBob

Primitive Sponge

In "SB-129," Squidward accidentally travels to early prehistoric times, where he meets early ancestors of SpongeBob and Patrick. This primitive sponge has little in common with his modern counterpart, being a savage and unintelligent creature with no discernible spoken language. He and Primitive Star are seen stinging themselves with a jellyfish, and Squidward teaches them jellyfishing to stop them from torturing themselves, inadvertently inventing the sport in the process. He then sits down to play his clarinet, but the sound angers SpongeBob and Patrick's ancestors, and they begin viciously chasing him until he reaches the time machine.

SpongeGar[]

Main article: SpongeGar
Spongegar

SpongeGar

SpongeGar was a prehistoric ancestor of SpongeBob, SpongeBuck, SpongeTron, BlackJack, Harold, Stanley, Blue, Todd, Sherm, Grandpa SquarePants, and possibly Larry. seen in "Ugh." SpongeGar and Patar are distinct from the Neanderthal-like beings seen in "SB-129," more closely resembling their modern-day counterparts and having developed a simple language. They, along with Squog inadvertently discover fire, and quickly begin fighting over it.

SpongeBuck SquarePants[]

Spongebuck Squarepants

SpongeBuck SquarePants

SpongeBuck SquarePants was an ancestor of Grandpa SquarePants, Harold, Blue, Sherm, SpongeBob, BlackJack, Todd, Stanley, possibly Larry and SpongeTron, living in the wild west. He appeared in "Pest of the West." SpongeBuck moved to Dead Eye Gulch to seek employment, where he was immediately hired as the sheriff. He stood up to Dead Eye Plankton, a wealthy citizen who owned almost all the land in the town. SpongeBuck defeated him in a western-style stand-off, where he accidentally stomped on him. SpongeBuck had saved the town, and in his honor, a statue in his likeness was built. The statue was put in the center of the town, and, centuries later stood in downtown Bikini Bottom, where it was covered in jellyfish waste. When SpongeBob discovered his descent from SpongeBuck, he cleaned the statue to reveal his ancestor's likeness. SpongeBuck's story appears in the book, "Family Histories of Bikini Bottom." SpongeBuck had a tapeworm in his stomach.

Future Era[]

SpongeBob's grandson[]

SpongeBob's Grandson

SpongeBob's grandson appears in the episode "The Great Patty Caper," where he was shown 75 years into the future. He heard the story of Great Patty Caper that his Grandfather told him, though entirely ignored his SpongeBob's story by playing a video game and saying, "I beat my high score." He will look just like his grandfather, SpongeBob, but with a red hat, lighter voice, and will wear different clothes. Since SpongeBob is known to be 13-33 in the series, he will be 87-109 at the time of his grandchild's childhood. SpongeBob's grandson will also be the first cousin 2x removed of Stanley, Larry, BlackJack, Todd, the great-grandnephew of Blue and Sherm, the great-grandson of Harold and Margaret, the great great grandson of Grandpa and Grandma SquarePants, a descendant of SpongeBuck, Primitive Sponge, and SpongeGar, and possibly one of SpongeTron's ancestors.

SpongeTron[]

Main article: SpongeTron
SpongeTron

SpongeTron

SpongeTron will be a descendant of SpongeBob, Harold, Margaret, SpongeBuck, SpongeGar, Primitive Sponge, Grandpa SquarePants, and Grandma SquarePants. He will live in the 41st Century. He will look virtually identical to his present-day ancestor, but have various robotic abilities, such as hovering (by replacing his legs with rockets, a trait possibly inherited from SpongeBob's ability as seen in "Jellyfish Hunter" and "Krusty Towers") and heat vision. He will be able to change appearance by stating his name, causing most of his facial features to become angular. He will then change back to normal form. He will have 486 clones, each representing a letter of the alphabet, which will have been greatly expanded in the future. He was seen in "SB-129" to help Squidward get to the time machine, but accidentally misleads him into the can opener room. His best friend is PatTron who has two heads instead of one.
