Synopsis

This episode consists of the content shown on the Krusty Krab's training video for new employees.

The tape talks about the history of the restaurant, from it's founding to the present day.

The tape also gives instructions on how to be a good employee, such as keeping the workplace clean, and how to have good hygiene. Throughout the episode, SpongeBob SquarePants & Squidward Tentacles are respectively used as exaggerated examples of good & bad employees, with the narrator going as far as to use Squidward's name as a pejorative. SpongeBob himself is the subject of the training, and throughout the episode he is very eager to learn how to make a Krabby Patty, asking to several times throughout the course of the episode but being denied repeatedly. The episode ends with SpongeBob finally being told the formula. The narrator begins to say "The Secret Formula is-" before the episode ends abruptly.

Trivia

Template:Trivia

  • The intro to Eye Of The Tiger by Survivor (known as "Quest for the Best I") is featured in two photo montages as we see the Krusty Krab.
  • According to the episode's Pop-Up Trivia Facts (found on The Complete 3rd Season DVD Special features,) this is one of the most popular episodes in the season and series.
  • According to The Ultimate SpongeBob SpongeBash marathon's Celebrity Favorites, this is Keke Palmer's favorite episode.
  • If one would look closely at the "Training Manual," one can see the colors of the Hungarian flag (red, white, green).
  • The sign in the bathroom written in English ("Please, wash your fins") and Spanish ("Lave las aletas") is a parody of other similar signs found in public stores such as Walmart. The Spanish part of the sign is not a totally correct translation because it literally says "Wash the fins." A more correct translation of "Please, wash your fins" is actually "Por favor, lávese las aletas."
  • This marks the 100th episode segment of the series.
  • Plankton's robotic Krabby Patty walker is seen in the Chum Bucket LEGO set.
  • Plankton's line "Not until I shift into MAXIMUM OVERDRIVE" has become somewhat memetic amongst fans of the series.
  • During the original airing, many viewers did not know the ending was intentional and mistook it for a technical error.
  • Apparently, Mr. Krabs has a fleeting fear of robot overlords, which prevents him from over-technologizing the Krusty Krab.
  • This episode reveals that Mr. Krabs may have a problem with excessive sweating as he was shown having easily noticeable sweat marks without doing much.
  • This is the first episode to not tell much of a plot and instead tell people about the Krusty Krab. "Boat Smarts" is similar to this, though instead tackling the subject of boater's education.
  • This is the first episode to reveal Mr. Krabs' naval past as a war veteran (other than his obvious mariner mannerisms). However, it is never revealed which war he fought in.
  • When Mr. Krabs picks up Plankton to flick him out of the restaurant, Plankton's sped up voice slowed down can be heard saying, "Felicitations, malefactors! I am endeavouring to find my minions. And I know just how to speak their language."
  • Running Gags: SpongeBob saying "Can I make a Krabby Patty now?", Squidward exemplifying poor workmanship.
  • The reason the tape ends abruptly is possibly as a way of maintaining the secrecy of the Krabby Patty Formula out of legal protection. However, it is revealed in two Season One episodes "Plankton!" and "Pickles," and on the SpongeBob SquarePants Facebook page.
  • This is the second time the opening credits were not in an underwater background. The first was "SB-129." Ugh's opening credits are different style and font, but still underwater.
  • In the episode "As Seen on TV," Mr. Krabs is extremely stingy about making an expensive commercial. However, this episode is a somewhat professionally-made production most likely paid for by "Krusty Krab Inc.," which is also mentioned. It can be inferred that this episode is set before "As Seen on TV", and the cost of producing the training video caused Mr. Krabs to become stingier about spending costs.
  • This episode may have no purpose other than being a training video for future employees, even though SpongeBob and Squidward will work at the Krusty Krab for the rest of their physical existence (as seen in "Squid on Strike"). However, this episode may take place before "Squid on Strike."
  • This is the second time a title card is on solid black. The first was "F.U.N."
  • Squidward and Patrick both noticed the narrator, thus breaking the fourth wall. Given the episode's instructional format, this is not out of place.

Cultural references

  • The music playing during 2 photo montages of The Krusty Krab being shown is "Quest for the Best I," which is a parody of the Survivor's Eye of the Tiger.
  • When Mr. Krabs says "The money is always right," it is a parody of "The customer is always right," a common phrase in business used to prevent profit-damaging quarrels between customers and staff.
  • At one point, a young Mr. Krabs is humming the tune of "Blow the Man Down," the sea shanty that the SpongeBob SquarePants theme song is based on.

Errors

  • In TV airings from 2002 (The episode's first airing) to 2006 (The year that got fixed,) the logo from Nickelodeon's Rugrats (Klasky Csupo logo appears instead of the normal logo (United Plankton Pictures logo). The reason the wrong logo was inserted is that the show's closing credits were electronically inserted alongside promos from other Nickelodeon programming and the show's closing logos. When the data was entered for this episode, the wrong logo was programmed in.
  • On the TV guide, the letter "K" in the word "Krab" was replaced with the letter C, effectively meaning it is called "Krusty Crab Training Video."
  • This episode should have been the next episode after "Help Wanted" since the narrator says that SpongeBob has been recently hired.
    • Although, since it's a training video, they probably used him as an example for future employees, due to him being the most recent member of the Krusty Krew.
  • When the spatula, cash register, straw and ketchup packets begin to spin around, causing SpongeBob's eyes to follow them, his nose is much shorter during the close-up.
  • In this episode, Plankton's eyelid is dark green, but in most episodes, his eyelid is the same color as his body.
  • On some versions of the episode, instead of saying "the secret formula is...," it says "the secret formula i..."
  • In the very beginning, the menu sign called "Galley Grub." In the Galley Grub, "Krusty Supreme" misspelled as "Krusty Suprem," there's no price for "Krusty Supreme," and the text is distorted.
  • The narrator says the Krusty Krab closes at 6:00 pm.
  • Although SpongeBob seems to be learning how to make a Krabby Patty for the first time here, in "Help Wanted" he is able to make them with ease before being officially hired. However, it is most likely that this is a video for new employees and SpongeBob is the "bus boy," but is just acting.
  • Plankton's voice goes normal to high pitched when he is being tossed out, but in all others he can be understood.
  • When SpongeBob is seen in "Personal Hygiene," lots of soap appears, even though SpongeBob is not actually seen with a soap bar, or a soap dispenser.
  • In the second montage of still photos of the Krusty Krab, the ninth picture shows the menu which has "Krabby Patty" misspelled as "Krabby Pattie." This picture looks very similar to the one seen on "Pickles."
  • In the Bahasa Indonesia version, when Patrick shocked after hearing the word "customer," that word was never translated into the Indonesian word, "pelanggan." However, in other episodes, the word "customer" is translated.
  • The graph, which shows the financial performance of the Krusty Krab has the axis featuring the profits inverted, so the Krusty Krab's profits are actually going down.
  • In this episode, it is revealed that Patrick is afraid of ghosts, exclaiming that the narrator is one. But in "Ghoul Fools," Patrick has no fear of ghosts and no belief of them. It's possible that he never believed in ghosts after Squidward told Patrick that the ghost is actually the narrator, and lost his fear of them.
  • When SpongeBob vigorously washes his hands, they are completely gone. In the next scene, he has his hands back. This may be because his hands grew back, for example, in "Graveyard Shift" when he pulls his arms off. Also, in "It Came from Goo Lagoon" SpongeBob says Good thing I keep a spare set of hands, and he takes off his hands, growing new ones.
    • This, however, is inaccurate in regards to SpongeBob's species.  Sea sponges don't regenerate by growing new body parts to replace damaged or lost ones; rather, the severed pieces simply reattach themselves to the rest of the body.  Therefore, it shouldn't be possible for SpongeBob to grow new arms.
