"Frozen Face-Off" is a SpongeBob SquarePants episode from season 8. In this episode, everyone in Bikini Bottom is participating in a worm-sled race to win one million dollars, but little do they know it is a set-up by Plankton to steal the secret formula unguarded.

Synopsis[]

Act 1[]

In the beginning of the episode, the Realistic Fish Head and Perch Perkins announces on the news that a sled race hosted by a mysterious entrepreneur is occurring in snowy Bikini Bottom with the prize being one million dollars and that all of Bikini Bottom has entered. Patrick says that he hopes he wins, but he only has gummy worms that lead his sled. Mr. Krabs, Plankton, Squidward, SpongeBob, and Sandy also prepare for the race. However, Plankton sneaks off to the Krusty Krab just before the race begins and uses a robot as his replacement in the race. Unsurprisingly, Patrick doesn't even make it pass the starting line due to the gummy worms being candy and not able to pull his sled. He soon catches up to SpongeBob and he agrees to let Patrick come along, much to Gary's dismay. Meanwhile, at the Krusty Krab, Plankton has trouble opening the safe of the secret formula.

Frozen Face-Off 112

"Hooray!"

Back in the race, Sandy uses robot worms to pull her sled and are set into high gear to give her a lead, but the remote shorts out, leaving her unable to slow down and eventually crash. Squidward's worm stops racing due to teatime. Squidward gets angry and goes on foot, only to fall through the ice of a frozen pond and freeze. He is soon discovered by SpongeBob and Patrick, who take him along with them. Shortly after, they find Sandy in a pile of snow, and they bring her along too. Mr. Krabs' worms become hungry, and they get mad and chase him. SpongeBob lets Mr. Krabs come along as well. The worms chase SpongeBob and the gang, and Gary has trouble pulling all of them. They are cornered at a dead end and Gary roars like a lion to scare the worms away. The group begins to cheer, but their joy is cut short when an avalanche traps them.

The gang decides to make a fire. Squidward thaws out, but the group encounters the Abominable snow mollusk, who tries to attack the group. Squidward runs away and jumps into a cold body of water, which freezes him again. Mr. Krabs tells SpongeBob about his first encounter with the creature and the group continues the race, only to realize that they forgot Squidward soon after. They go after him and save him from the snow mollusk with the help of Patrick's last gummy worm, who eats and enjoys it. They continue on, and Sandy realizes that Mr. Krabs has betrayed the group and gone off on his own so that he could win the prize himself, but gets stung by a jellyfish that flew into his mouth in the process.

Patrick then stops the sleigh and points out that he "saw something shiny" and SpongeBob notices that it is Karen frozen in ice. They break her out of the ice and discover robot Plankton, who is buried in the snow, and is destroyed when Patrick sits on him in an attempt to free him from the ice. Karen then explains that the whole race was a plot by Plankton, who was the mysterious entrepreneur all along and wants to keep everyone distracted while he steals the Krabby Patty secret formula from the Krusty Krab undetected. SpongeBob and the group go southwest to find Mr. Krabs. After a while, Gary is unable to go any further.

Act 2[]

Frozen Face-Off 308

"Atom by atom!"

Back at the Krusty Krab, the real Plankton fails to break open the secret formula safe yet again. Frustrated, Plankton proceeds to rip a bit, a molecule and an "atom" in half, which causes a nuclear explosion, destroying the Krusty Krab and the safe together and Plankton now gets the Secret Formula. Meanwhile, SpongeBob pulls the sled until they find a frozen Mr. Krabs. Immediately after, the rest of the group, including SpongeBob, but excluding Sandy, freezes as well. Sandy saves their lives by starting a fire with parts from the sled. Once everyone thaws out, Karen explains to Mr. Krabs the race was a trick by Plankton and the prize money for the race was false. Sandy figures out how to use the members of the group as a substitute sled. They return to Bikini Bottom to see that the Krusty Krab has been destroyed and Plankton has stolen the formula. However, he cannot get the bottle open. The group finds Plankton trying to open it. When Plankton expresses his frustration at not being able to open the bottle, Patrick stupidly opens the bottle, allowing Plankton to finally take the formula out.

Frozen Face-Off 395

Plankton gets eaten by the snow mollusk.

Plankton then pretends to surrender and uses a pen to fly away out of the Chum Bucket. The group chases Plankton into a net trap that Plankton trapped them in. However, the snow mollusk returns, frees the group, and eats Patrick's jelly beans, then hugs the pink sea star. Plankton tries to escape, but the snow mollusk mistakes him for a jelly bean and eats him, dropping the secret formula and returning it to Mr. Krabs in the process, with Karen showing no sympathy for Plankton. The episode ends as Plankton waits to be digested.

Trivia[]

General[]

Patchy's Haiku - Frozen Face-Off

Patchy's poem.

  • To promote the premiere of this episode, the Nickelodeon website featured poems from Patchy that gave clues about the abominable snow mollusk. They were advertised in on-air commercials, and viewers could visit Nick.com to guess what Patchy's clues meant.
  • This episode was promoted as "SpongeBob's Frozen Face-Off." The DVD cover still has this title.
  • Despite the title card and the whole episode being winter-themed, this episode premiered in mid-summer in the United States and Canada. However, several international countries premiered this episode during winter months.
  • The frozen tundra reappears in the Nick.com point-and-click games SpongeBob's Big Adventures and SpongeBob's Next Big Adventure.
  • This is the first half hour special of season 8.
  • This marks the 300th episode segment of the series in both production order and airing order.
  • This episode was simulcast in the United States and the Netherlands.[citation needed]
  • This episode strangely has no bubble transition before the episode starts after the title card's credits, making this the first, and so far, only half-hour special not to feature a bubble transition at the beginning.
  • The title card background for this episode is similar to that of "Survival of the Idiots."
  • Squidward's outfit resembles those worn in Russia during winter.
  • The fighter jet that Plankton flies resembles the real life Lockheed Martin F-16 Fighting Falcon. The F-16 was first manufactured by General Dynamics, the same company that created the F-111, and later by Lockheed Martin. Today, the F-16 is used by the US Air Force and its export customers such as Israel.
  • It is unknown where the finish line was, or if there even was a finish line to begin with.
  • When Plankton rips an atom, he is ripping off protons and neutrons from the atom. Such acts release a tremendous amount of energy. In theory, this is enough energy to split another atom, causing a chain reaction that could result in an atomic explosion as shown in the episode.
    • The "molecule" Plankton rips apart only contains four baryons. In real life, this would be a helium atom, rather than molecular iron.
  • "Steel Licks 33" plays a total of three times, while "Steel Licks 22" and "Greenhorn Rag" play two times in this episode.
  • In Indonesia, "One Frozen Wasteland Later" time card was changed to "Satu Menit Kemudian" (One Minute Later). This was done to simplify the translation.
    • "One Frozen Wasteland Later" in Indonesian is "Satu Gurun Beku Kemudian."
  • Plankton cannot open the Krabby Patty secret formula bottle because he cannot get the cork off with his hands. However, in "Plankton's Army" and "Bucket Sweet Bucket," he is shown getting the cork off by using a corkscrew.
  • The plot of Plankton keeping everyone busy in a race so he can easily get the Krabby Patty secret formula, is similar to that of Baytona 500.
  • There is an app game that is based on this episode.
  • This is the second episode that had a plot change occur between airing and advertisements, the first being "Truth or Square."
  • This is the second episode where Gary roars like a lion, the first being in "Your Shoe's Untied" to talk to SpongeBob. This time, he roars like a lion to frighten off vicious worms.
  • This is the second episode in which Plankton is confused for a jelly bean, the first being "F.U.N."
  • This is the second appearance of claymation in the series, with the first being the SpongeBob SquarePants Theme Song for "Truth or Square."
    • This is the third episode to show an atomic explosion. The first was "Dying for Pie," and the second was "The Krusty Plate."
  • This is the fourth and currently last episode to have five writers. The others were "Bubblestand," "Friend or Foe," and "The Clash of Triton."
  • The February 27, 2023 airing of this episode at 8:00 PM was the first piece of media on the network to use the 2023 Nickelodeon logo, but it was only during the closing credits in that airing.[1]
    • However, "The Big Bad Bubble Bass" March 4, 2023 airing at 7:30 AM was the first to officially feature the 2023 logo during the full airing and not just the closing credits.[2]
    • "Ma and Pa's Big Hurrah" was the first episode to premiere after Nickelodeon's 2023 logo redesign.
