Synopsis

On the ocean's surface, an artist in a rowboat sketches feverishly. Unfortunately, his pencil slips from his hand and falls into the sea. As the artist cries out in horror, the French Narrator states the first rule of the artist at sea: "Always bring a spare pencil."

Down on the ocean floor, SpongeBob and Patrick are playing "Rock-Paper-Scissors" using bubbles when the pencil suddenly lands in between them. SpongeBob and Patrick, at first terrified of the large artifact, start to doodle with it. They soon come to discover that whatever they draw with the pencil is brought to life, and thus dub it the "Magic Pencil."

"Aww, look at him. Ain't he a doll?"

SpongeBob soon draws "DoodleBob," a sketch version of himself intended to fool Squidward. However, DoodleBob beats Squidward up, steals the magic pencil and wreaks havoc across the seascape. SpongeBob eventually turns the tide of battle and uses the pencil's eraser to rub out DoodleBob.

Unbeknownst to SpongeBob and Patrick, a lone arm remains, and in the night it steals the pencil back from SpongeBob and redraws its body. DoodleBob then attempts to erase SpongeBob, and during the struggle, the pencil is snapped in half. DoodleBob has the eraser and SpongeBob has the point. However, DoodleBob sharpens his half and SpongeBob accidentally flicks his pencil out the window. DoodleBob corners SpongeBob in front of a bookshelf, but steps on a sheet of paper and finds his leg absorbed into it.

Seizing his chance, SpongeBob closes DoodleBob in a book, in which the doodle is finally happy. The page with Doodlebob is framed on a wall. Patrick arrives and listens to SpongeBob's musings on the nature of his doppelgänger, taking SpongeBob's photograph for the doodle. They decide to send the Magic Pencil back from whence it came, shooting it back up to the distraught artist. With his drawing instrument returned, the artist prepares to begin a new masterpiece, but when the pencil meets the canvas, the lead snaps. As the artist cries out once more, the French Narrator states the second rule of the artist at sea: "Always bring a pencil sharpener."

Reception

This episode is number 8 on Tom Kenny's Top 20 on iTunes. His description says:

  • As a legacy of this episode, quotes from Patrick whenever DoodleBob hits him with another doodle, 'Where's the leak, ma'am?" (hit in the head with a wrench), and "FINLAND!" (knocked down twice by a bowling ball) are popular on the internet.
  • This episode is tied with "Krusty Krab Training Video," "No Weenies Allowed," "Wet Painters," and "SpongeBob Meets the Strangler," "Life of Crime," and "Christmas Who?" as the highest ranked episode on SpongeBuddy Mania with 9.6/10.
  • As of August 24, 2016, The Internet Movie Database (IMDB) gives this episode a rating of 9.3/10 based on 306 ratings by users.[1] TV.com users give this episode a rating of 9.2/10 based on 172 votes.[2]

Trivia

Template:Trivia

  • The artist at sea is Mr. Lawrence, who works on the show and voices Plankton and Larry the Lobster.
  • The pencil shown in the live-action version is longer while the animated version is shorter. This is likely to make the pencil easier for SpongeBob and Patrick to handle.
  • Patrick's question on whether it's DoodleBob's birthday can actually be answered in the affirmative, as it is still the day of DoodleBob's creation.
  • Even though DoodleBob spoke total gibberish, at one point he is heard speaking English when he says, "You doodle! Me SpongeBob!"
  • Running Gag: Patrick being hit in the head with various objects by Doodlebob (which was cut in Indonesia possibly due to excessive violence). Also something happens to the artist's pencil, the Narrator gives a lesson of the sea, then the artist screams.
  • In Indonesia, the scene where SpongeBob works against DoodleBob to erase him entirely, leaving only his left hand, was cut. This was likely due to time constraints like some other episodes that also aired in Indonesia due to airing along with ads. However, it was possibly cut due to being too brutal to be shown.
  • DoodleBob has also appeared in some video games: Nicktoons Unite! (console version), Drawn to Life: SpongeBob SquarePants Edition and DoodleBob and the Magic Pencil (unofficial game).
  • According to The Ultimate SpongeBob SpongeBash, Tony Hawk rated this episode as his favorite.
  • Patrick would use the phrase "Finland!" again in "Accidents Will Happen" and The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water.

Cultural references

  • The way DoodleBob erases part of SpongeBob's house was very similar to the 1954 Looney Tunes Cartoon "Devil May Hare."
  • The title is a parody of Frankenstein.
  • SpongeBob telling DoodleBob that he brought him into this world and can take him out is a reference to a line from The Cosby Show: "You know, I brought you in this world, and I can take you out."

Errors

SpongeDoodle?

  • Xfinity's description for this episode calls DoodleBob "SpongeDoodle."
  • Captions on iTunes incorrectly call DoodleBob "Doodle Boy."
  • At the start of the episode, the artist is seen making many strokes on the canvas. But when he gets his pencil back at the end of the episode, the canvas is blank. It's possible that he replaced the canvas during the time SpongeBob had the pencil.
  • Since the pencil is made out of wood, it shouldn't have sunk to the bottom of the sea.
  • While the pencil was falling towards Bikini Bottom, SpongeBob and Patrick were playing Rock-Paper-Scissors with bubbles. However, when the pencil crashes into the sea floor, the bubble blowers and bubble fluid are gone.
  • During the part where SpongeBob and Patrick are watching DoodleBob, SpongeBob's belt is missing. After Patrick says, "that stupid tie!" and SpongeBob clears his throat, Patrick says, "Oh, but it looks good on you SpongeBob," and then SpongeBob and Patrick both gasp when they see what DoodleBob is doing. As they gasp, look closely. You'll notice that SpongeBob's belt appears for a second and then disappears again.
  • SpongeBob is wearing his regular clothes in bed, while in other episodes, he wears his underwear or pajamas to bed.
  • The DoodleBob has three fingers at first, but when his hand enters SpongeBob's bedroom and takes the pencil, he has four fingers instead of three. After he redraws himself, he has three fingers again.
  • When SpongeBob and DoodleBob are in SpongeBob's living room, in the initial shot of the TV, the images next to it are just shots of barren landscape. In the next shot, they are images of Patrick, SpongeBob, and the pineapple respectively. In the third shot, they are just solid colors. In the fourth shot, they go back to the images of Patrick, SpongeBob, and the pineapple. In the fifth shot, they go back to the solid colors. This back and forth happens two more times. The final shots of the photos are Patrick, SpongeBob, and the pineapple.
  • When SpongeBob breaks the pencil, it is snapped in half, but after DoodleBob points SpongeBob with it after SpongeBob accidentally throws his half, the pencil was its regular length.
  • When SpongeBob looks at the book, he says, "Paper!" However, his lips don't move at all when he says it. It is possible that SpongeBob was just thinking of the word "paper" in his mind instead of saying it.
  • When SpongeBob tapes the pencil together, the two halves fit perfectly even though one half is sharpened and has an eraser at the other end.
