Kelp is a type of algae seaweed. In Bikini Bottom, it is a very commonly used ingredient in many foods and drinks. It first appears in the episode "Reef Blower."

Role in series[]

Kelp is a prominent ingredient used in a wide variety of foods and drinks. Most products that contain it have their names as parodies of foods that are sold in the real world, with the word "kelp" in place of a word in the food's real name. It also is the equivalent of grass, sometimes trees.

There is also a forest that revolves around the plant called Kelp Forest.

The main mascot of the popular cereal brand Kelpo, Kelpy, is a piece of Kelp himself.

There is a spray that enlarges the size of this plant called Kelp Grow, which appears in "Giant Squidward."

"Reef Blower"[]

Squidward tries to eat a plate of a kelp leaf, but is disturbed by SpongeBob's reef blower.

"Nature Pants"[]

Jellyfish are seen eating it.

"The Sponge Who Could Fly"[]

"Born to Be Wild"[]

SpongeBob and Patrick hide in some grass made from it, after being spat out of a giant clam, only for someone to mow it while they're inside.

"Porous Pockets"[]

The giant clam is seen inside a bush of it.

"Giant Squidward"[]

Squidward is revealed to have a kelp garden, which Patrick eats the contents of. Later in the episode, SpongeBob and Patrick somehow make a giant clarinet out of it.

"The Wreck of the Mauna Loa"[]

SpongeBob suspects someone's following him and Patrick to their secret hideout, so he looks in a nearby kelp bush, and is relived when he sees nobody, only to see Mr. Krabs behind him.

"Food Con Castaways"[]

It has a very minor appearance in the background.

"Don't Feed the Clowns"[]
