Battle for Bikini Bottom: Rehydrated[]

Pineapple-Win64-Shipping 2020-07-03 17-23-43-973

The unused version of Patrick's Dream as it appears in Battle for Bikini Bottom: Rehydrated.

  1. General[63]
  • The game's codename is "Pineapple."
  • The unused version of Patrick's Dream from the original game is present in the game files alongside the scrapped third phase against SpongeBot. But now, both levels are completely textureless. This suggests they were likely intended to be included in the main game instead of appearing in the multiplayer mode.
    • Interestingly, two candy canes were added between the two islands in Patrick's Dream.
  • There's a test level named "BattleArena_P" which was used to tests the enemies' behaviors, with each enemy having its own door.
  • There's an unused model of a Jellyfish net, named "SK_Spongebob_Net." It has one animation called "attack" suggesting it may have been intented to be SpongeBob's weapon in the multiplayer mode.
    • The net would be eventually used in The Cosmic Shake where SpongeBob would use it when attacking a jellyfish.
  • The model of a police boat is present in the game file. While it was likely meant for the Police Station, a similar boat can be found in the intro cutscene but unseen by players.
  • There is a model of a skate ramp, likely intended for revisiting the SpongeBall Arena similarly to the original game.
    • The ramp was actually present in the 1.0 version but was later disabled in the day one patch when it was found you could spawn the entrance when getting 77 spatulas.
  • A different texture for SpongeBob can be found in the files. Interestingly, it look similar to the texture used for SpongeBob's model in The Cosmic Shake.
  • Cubemaps from an early version of the hub world can be found in Bikini Bottom files.
  • Present in the files of the 1.0 version of the game, is an unused video called "islandvideo.mp4," which seems to be raw footage of the pre-2016 design of the Bikini Atoll island from the theme song.
  1. Gamescom builds[64]
BFBB 05 HD

Prerelease screenshots, with SpongeBob standing on an early design of the Flying Tiki.

On August 20, 2019, two builds of the game were shown during Gamescom 2019. The first one, titled "Rev. 584213," was shown on IGN YouTube channel. The second one, titled "Rev. 584493" was a slightly more recent playable demo, present on THQ Nordic's booth, during the trade exhibition. Both builds features a 15 minute timer, the first area of Jellyfish Fields and the King Jellyfish boss fight. The game was in "Pre-Alpha" state at that point.

  • Jellyfish Fields' skybox is a mix between a blue and orange sky.
    • The level also has a more "orange" lighting.
  • The dialogue between SpongeBob and the non-playable characters are much more shorter. This change was possibly done for the demo only.
  • The hint signs are missing in both builds.
  • The buttons use the same textures as the original game.
  • Bungee jumping and the teleportation boxes hadn't been implemented yet and have a "coming soon" sign in front of them.
  • The camera is more closer to the playable character. This was changed in the remake to be more similar to the original game.
  • SpongeBob's physics is different. For example, his "Bubble Bounce" move is more slower in the demo.
  • The characters' animations are more primitive in both builds.
  • Gary's model is different, as it looks more similar to its original game counterpart.
  • The Duplicatotron 1000's light bulbs are untextured.
  • The wooden gates simply just slide down into the ground upon being opened.
  • The Bikini Bottomites don't react when a robot is near them.
  • The Puffer Fishes don't have any animations upon hitting the ground in the "Rev. 584213" build.
  • Ham-Mer's taunt animation is slightly different as his head is not punched into his glowing compartment.
  • There's no mechanical bits or parts that drops from the robots when destroyed.
  • The Flying Tiki had a different design in "Rev. 584213" where it looks more closer to its original design and is lacking a bubble underneath it. In the "Rev. 584493" build, the model was changed to its final design.
  • The Wooden Tikis has red markings on them. This look can still be seen in promotional artwork and on the collectible keychains featured in the "F.U.N." Collector's Edition of the game.
  • The golden spatula doesn't have any "glowing" aura around it.
  • The sock icon in the HUD looks slightly different.
  • The SpongeBob font is used for the texts and HUD. It was changed to an entirely different font in the final game.
  • The Shiny Objects emit a different sound upon collecting.
  • The clam near the bridge, asks to be fed 125 "Shiny Things," rather than "Shiny Objects."
  • King Jellyfish is referred to as "Jellyfish King."
  1. IGN Screenshots[65]

Prerelease screenshots of Jellyfish Fields with Patrick, surrounded by tikis.

On October 25, 2019, multiple screenshots of the game were shown on IGN website, displaying the three sections of Jellyfish Fields alongside the first in-game look at Patrick.

  • Jellyfish Fields now uses its final skybox. The lighting is still orangish however.
  • The Thunder and Stone Tikis' designs are different. The Stone Tikis have green markings on them while the Thunder Tikis are yellow. Just like the Wooden Tikis, these designs can still be seen in promotional artwork and on the collectible keychains featured in the "F.U.N." Collector's Edition of the game.
  • The Duplicatotron 1000's light bulbs are now textured.
  • In the first section of Jellyfish Fields, a bus stop can be seen near Squidward which isn't present in the original or final game.

Two concept art were also revealed, showing Downtown Bikini Bottom and Rock Bottom. While Rock Bottom looks identical to its final version, the concept art for Downtown Bikini Bottom has a few differences not seen in the final game.

  • Similarly to Jellyfish Fields, Downtown Bikini Bottom was also planned to have a "sunrise" theme.
  • The city look more "destroyed," with hot sauces and toilet papers scattered on the buildings and graffiti referencing Plankton being present all around the town. None of these additional details were added in the final game.
  1. PAX East build

Battle for Bikini Bottom: Rehydrated was present at THQ Nordic's booth at PAX East 2020. While only the Gamescom demo was playable to the public, a much more recent version of the game was shown to the press. The multiplayer mode and the entirety of Jellyfish Fields were played during the press demo. Although, only footages of the first section of Jellyfish Fields have been released publicly.

  • Jellyfish Fields and the characters' models and animations are now identical to the final game.
    • The Tikis are also using their final designs.
  • Strangely, Ham-Mer's model is different in this build, appearing much more lower-poly and lacking teeth in its mouth. This issue was fixed in the day one patch.
  • The NPC still doesn't react when hit or when a robot is near them.
  • The SpongeBob font is still in use for the HUD.
  • The position of the "Saving Game" icon is different, being on the lower center of the screen.
  • SpongeBob's pants texture are misaligned when bungee jumping.
  1. Pre-Hydrated Trailers

On April 16, 2020, THQ Nordic revealed a brand new gameplay trailer, announcing the release date at the same time, then followed by multiple trailers introducing the game's levels. Although the build in the trailers was much closer to final, it still has- a few notable differences.

  • The font for the cruise bubble timer does not have white outlines.
  • Caustics were originally much more omnipresent around levels. A lot of them were removed in the day one patch.
  • The animation for swapping characters at the bus stop has a different camera angle.
  • The Jellyfish Caves' design is different, looking more similar to its original counterpart. The day one patch revamped Jellyfish Caves' design by adding bigger blue crystals throughout the level.
  • In Rock Bottom Museum, the plaques near the exhibitions originally said "Bold and Brash, Squidward Tentacles, Belong in the trash." The texture for the plaques was changed in the final version for an unintelligible text.
  • There's no Texas landscape underneath Sandy's Dream.
  • Robo-Sandy's tail doesn't emits any smokes or fire.
  • The multiplayer mode is still using the SpongeBob font.
    • The robots are also turning red after they've been hit once.

Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl[]

  1. General[67]
  • The game was originally titled "Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl Universe" according to an early title screen graphic.
  • When the game was first released, files for three unused fighters were found. Those fighters are : Garfield (codenamed "orb" in the files), Shredder (codenamed "cheese") and Rocksteady (codenamed "hunter"), both from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Garfield released as a free DLC on December 9 2021 [68] while Shredder released on February 3, 2022.[69] Rocksteady was confirmed to have been scrapped and replaced by Shredder.[70]
    • Unlike Rocksteady, Shredder and Garfield had localization files for their respective Arcade intro and Moveset descriptions. They also could be playable through modding. Although, in an unfinished form.
    • According to a developer, Rocksteady "didn't have any model work done."[71]
    • Rocksteady's files were removed in "Update 02-03-2022."
  • Two unused stages were found in the files ; One for Garfield called "Sweet Dreams" and a level based on the television game show Double Dare, called "Silme Time." Both stages can be playable through modding with "Sweet Dreams" being added at the same time as Garfield. "Slime Time" was later added in "Update 02-03-2022."
    • Interestingly, the early icon for "Sweet Dreams" showcase a prototype version of the level.
    • In "Update 10-18-2021," the themes for both stages were added.
  • Items, while initially not present in the game, could be found the code at launch, although they originally use placeholder graphics, they can be spawned in the game through modding. Some of these items included, the Turtle Blimp, a Krabby Patty, an Exploding pie, Sandy's rocket, Squidward's clarinet, a toolbox that would have created a temporary platform and an item called "sleeper" which would start screaming when kicked. According to a developer, this was supposed to be Buhdeuce from Breadwinners.[72]
    • In "Update 10-18-2021," the items were updated with new renders. The Krusty Krab blimp from "The Good Krabby Name" was also added in this update, replacing the Turtle Blimp.
    • In "Update 06-06-2022," items along with voice acting was added to the game. However, four items seems to have been completely cut such as the Krusty Krab blimp, the fishing hook, the toolbox and sleeper/Buhdeuce.
  • Ittle Dew, a character from the game of the same name, is present in the game files. This is a leftover from Ludosity's previous game, Slap City which runs on the same engine.
    • It is possible to restore and play as her through modding.[73]
  • Models for a grenade and a gun exists in the files. According to a developer, These are simply "sample assets" present in the project since the beginning.[74]
  • In the character data for SpongeBob, there's mention in the code of an ability called "yummerSummon" which is a reference to the infamous placeholder character, "Yummer" found in SpongeBob Saves the Day!. There are no associated assets to this code and it was simply put there by one of the developers as a joke.[75]
  • Announcer calls for items and unused characters are present in the game. Some of them mention Squidward, Mr. Krabs, Barnacle Boy, Mermaid Man and Plankton. It's unknown if those characters are planned to be DLC or were scrapped.
  1. Prerelease
  • Before the game started development, a concept poster was realized by Christopher Near, featuring most notably characters that are absent from the game roster such as Jimmy Neutron, Wanda from The Fairly OddParents, Krumm from Aaahh!!! Real Monsters, Angelica from Rugrats, Reggie from Rocket Power, and Casey Jones and Raphael from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.[76][77]
  • Alternative colors were planned for the game but were scrapped and replaced by alternate costumes instead. The reason being that alternative skins needed to be official.[78][79]
  • Garfield's existence was first leaked through two lineup sheets on a Latin America website on August 27, 2021.[80]
  • Garfield's alternate costume was different in prerelease screenshots, showcasing a stained bib instead of a checkered bib.

  • According to unused voiclines in the files, there was originally a quest where Plankton would appear in each worlds in order to study and research on the jelly ennemies. This supposedly got replaced by the Spot quest instead.
  • An earlier model for the Tartar Jelly, called "Sprayer Range", can be found in the files.
  • The bridges in the Jelly Squidward's boss fight were initially made out of jelly and could be destroyed by Jelly Squidward's shockwaves. They were changed to normal bridges in the day one patch.
  • There were three different colored variants planned for the Cosmic jelly: purple, green, and blue. In the final game, the cosmic jellies are only colored pink.
    • Although in prerelease footages, cosmic jelly were initially colored blue.
