This is a page for creating and resolving concerns on the topic: "Add a new punctuation rule to the grammar guide."

Proposal

I am proposing a revised punctuation rule for the grammar guide, concerning semicolons and colons and how they should be used in relation to quotation marks.

  • 3. Never insert punctuation to the right of quotations. Put the punctuation in the inside. Always put commas, periods, question marks, and exclamation points inside quotation marks.
    • Incorrect: This was revealed in the episode "Help Wanted".
    • Correct: This was revealed in the episode "Help Wanted."
  • 4. Always put colons and semicolons outside quotation marks.
    • Incorrect: "I'm losing my footing!;" "Yay, life insurance!"
    • Correct: "I'm losing my footing!"; "Yay, life insurance!"

This is the correct grammar rule, proven here and here.  Figmeister (WCE)  22:41, February 4, 2018 (UTC)
