Introduction

On October 13, 2014, ESB abolished the adminship requirements to increase the wiki's staff, which at the time had fallen from a high of 15 during the summer to a low of 7 when the requirements were removed. Since then, there have been two updates that make me believe the lack of requirements are no longer necessary:

  • The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water was released. One of the main reasons we got rid of the requirements was because we anticipated a spike of activity and thus a need of a bigger staff around the time the movie came out. The movie is now out of theaters, so whatever pressure there was to recruit more admins due to it is gone
  • We created the assistants position, which allows us to recognize users with good contributions and even give them some admin tools without making them administrators right away. Combining admins and assistants, we have a staff of 15 again, and with other user groups like thread and chat moderator, we have endless ways to acknowledge great editors who aren't quite ready to be admin yet

In just this month alone, we've had five requests with 0% support. One of those requests had no reason, and two of them were repeat requests. Establishing requirements won't stop these types of requests from being made, but it'll make it easier for admins to spot them and delete them before they draw too much attention. That's what we do with bureaucrat requests, and while we've had 31 unsuccessful admin requests since the requirements were abolished, we've had only one unsuccessful bureaucrat request in that same time and another that was deleted according to the policy. Not having requirements is doing RfA more harm than good at this point, and users who want administrator rights enough should have no problem meeting basic requirements to do so.

Patapon Donchaka recently created a petition for adminship requirements which passed, though I've been planning to make this discussion since yesterday. My proposed requirements won't be as harsh as his, but it should still be sufficient enough to weed out bad requests.

Proposal

Replace the adminship requirements in its current form with these:

  • B. Adminship Requirements
In order for a contributor to qualify for the administration, they must meet the following.

1. User must have at least 200 edits of which at least 100 of these are main namespace edits. 2. User must have been on the wiki for at least thirty (30) days since the date of their earliest edit. 3. If user has been blocked, the latest block cannot have ended less than thirty (30) days prior to the request. 4. User must have a reason that is at least three sentences long and uses proper spelling and grammar.

Every successful request since the requirements were removed have followed these requirements, and a very good portion of the requests that weren't successful haven't, meaning these requirements probably won't lead to us missing out on any good admins, but they'll definitely lead to us missing out on a lot of spam requests. If any modifications need to to be made, I can make them, but this seems adequate for now.

Oppose

  • Oppose Oppose - per my reasons from the October 2014 discussion. If we don't feel someone is qualified, we will oppose their request. If someone joins the wiki and makes great contributions in short amount of time, they are restricted. Some have called the rules of ESB strict; this makes them less restrictive. We promote people at our own discretion. We judge their abilities based on what we have seen. If they are not qualified, they will not be promoted. If they are VERY unqualified, of course they will not be promoted. This only hurts good contributors who could make great administrators. We don't have any issues with the admin process... why mess with them now? — AMK152 (Wall • Contrib) 23:08, July 24, 2015 (UTC)
