Proposal

I'd like to explore a discussion surrounding forbidding promotion nominations. Every so often, someone will nominate someone for admin, assistant, chat mod, or bureaucrat, and that person may or may not want to have that position. We also have the issue when an inexperienced editor may nominate someone for a position who may be unqualified and such a promotion may not be something that user would want. I believe that if a person wants to be promoted, they should be the only one to make the discussion. Note that this does not include User of the Month, of course. Let me know your thoughts. — AMK152 (Wall • Contrib) 20:23, May 22, 2016 (UTC)

Concerns

Created concern: Allowing users to request the removal of their nominations, if they were never told about the nomination in advance, and would never have accepted the nomination in the first place.

I know right? I would have declined my nomination for administrator. 1) The nominee was a cross wiki troll, vandal, and sock-puppeteer who just wanted to nominate a user that he'd chosen to troll. 2) I didn't even know about the nomination in advance, so it wasn't until a couple of months later that I discovered my nomination. 3) Had I known about the nomination in advance, I would have declined it, and I would even have nominated it for deletion, except I can't edit the page, and also I haven't removed it from this list, because I didn't want to run the risk of being scolded for it. I think that users who are being nominated should at least be informed about the said nomination in advance so that they can accept or decline. And if the nomination has already taken place, then that user should have the opportunity to request the removal of that nomination from the wiki's revision history. ― C.Syde (talk | contribs) 08:00, May 23, 2016 (UTC)

I'm on the fence here. On the one hand I like the fact users are able to nominate other users in that users might be too modest too apply for Admin positions. Certainly on other wikis I've certainly seen users who are too modest to self-request and it is in fact sometimes frowned upon on some communities such as the Yu-Gi-Oh! Wikia for example. I can also see your point about users being put forward when they might not want the position. Still, I think we could just remove the request and leave it at that. Not sure. --Spongebob456 talk 15:07, May 23, 2016 (UTC)

Created concern: Why

PreviewModifyComment
I feel like this discussion was directed at me for nominating a user. Why? Nominating for rights is very helpful and it lets users have opinions on other users. Apparently the guy i nominated, andraman was inactive, if that happens just close it if they are inactive. Nominating should be kept. If they don't want the rights when they get nominated they should havae a admin close it.  Davies.lopez004 (MessagesContribs) Spongebob2

If they are not around to see it, they cannot request it to be withdrawn. — AMK152 (Wall • Contrib) 13:13, May 24, 2016 (UTC)

I know, that's why i said if they are inactive it should be closed.  Davies.lopez004 (MessagesContribs) Spongebob2

The bottom line is that users do not want to be nominated by just any old user. Especially not from annoying users who live their lives wreaking havoc on wikis and making a mess. I didn't even want to be nominated for a start, and especially not from a user who trolled me and various other users on the Sims wiki. If I had my way, that entire page containing my nomination would be deleted, and the nomination would be removed from the list of closed admin requests.

If we continue allowing users to nominate others, then the candidate should at least be informed of the nomination in advance so that they can accept or decline it. Because I was not notified of the request, I was not there to decline it, which I otherwise would have been, since I was, and still am fairly active on Wikia. ― C.Syde (talk | contribs) 06:34, May 26, 2016 (UTC)

Created concern: My Thoughts

I've noticed that you said 'every once in a while'. My thought is that you should tell the people who are planning on nominating that you should have proof that thy want that promotion. When they have been selected, someone should ask them before they get promoted if they want that position. If the person accepts it, yet they spend the next three months doing nothing on the Wiki, I'd like to think that their position should be taken away, because they aren't using it. I do agree on some of your points, but I think that this feature is pretty much unique to this community, so its removal would take away a huge part of the democratic atmosphere that finds its home here. - Snowstripe Ismayonnaiseaninstrumentpatrick Are message walls an instrument?

Created concern: Only ranked users being able to nominate

Could we not just make it so that only users with a certain rank can nominate other users?

That will prevent trolling users and ranked users are probably knowledgeable about nominations.

This would be a good compromise. — AMK152 (Wall • Contrib) 15:42, June 1, 2016 (UTC)

I think this is a great idea.  Nicko756 (MCE) Sign!Dp  22:31, June 1, 2016 (UTC)
