Introduction

In the contest referee and policies discussion, most users agreed that we should establish official contest rules via a discussion. These are the current contest rules as written by 120d. We can use those rules as a base, or we can start over from scratch for the official contest policy. Discuss what you would like us to do for the policy, and even write your own draft if you are so inclined. We'll take all of your opinions into consideration when putting together the official contest rules.

Copy and paste the following in the discussions section and replace "USER" with your username.

This discussion will be ongoing until we have collected as many user's opinions as possible. ~JCM 22:48, June 23, 2015 (UTC)

I think the current rules written by 120d are fine. AMK152 and JCM's rules are good.  Nicko756 (MCE) Sign!Dp  01:17, July 13, 2015 (UTC)

AMK152

I reworded/adjusted/ordered the rules 120d had listed:

  • A. General
  • 1. Every decision about the current background of the wiki is determined by the outcome of background contests.
  • 2. Contests go by Eastern Standard Time (EST), not Coordinated Universal Time (UTC).
  • B. Opening contests
  • 1. Only administrators may start a background contest. However, if you want to start one, it is advised you consult 120d or AMK152 before doing so because of their knowledge of the contests, especially if you are unfamiliar with how they work.
  • 2. All contests should have at least a two week voting period.
  • C. Submission guidelines
  • 1. All backgrounds must relate to SpongeBob or they will be removed.
  • 2. When submitting a background, do not use the winner of the previous year. The winner of two or more years past is allowed. If you submit a background that won the previous year, it will be removed.
  • 3. You are allowed to submit backgrounds that did not win the previous year.
  • a. For Summer background contests, this rule does not apply. However, if a background from the previous year has placed in the same position as in the previous year, then it will be disqualified and the next position will be the winner of that placement.
  • 4. You are allowed to make your own background.
  • a. If you choose this option, try to make it as about as large as a background.
  • 5. When making an entry, you should use the correct format. This format should be provided on the contest page.
  • 6. If you are going to add an image from the Internet, before submitting an image, check if that image can be found in a bigger size and submit that image instead.
  • D. Voting
  • 1. If you are opposed or neutral, do not give reasons why an image is bad, but instead why an image should not be used as the background.
  • a. If you wish to point out flaws to the image, explain the reason for voting the way you are in detail. (example: Instead of "This image is not colored completely.", explain why this hinders your vote to be a "like". Here is a better version: "This image is not colored completely, which, in my opinion, would make it look weird in the size of the background.")
  • b. Please do not criticize insignificant things inside the image. There is a difference between mentioning that a mother's day image has SpongeBob and his grandmother and criticizing if an image because it does not have Squidward's window. There is no point to oppose a background for that reason if you like the other elements of the image.
  • c. If you are voting on a seasonal background contest and you want to give the reason, "this does not seem like a [insert season here] background" explain why you do not think that it is.
  • E. Deciding a winner
  • 1. At the beginning of the final week, the current standings should be added in a table. It should be removed when the winner is announced.
  • 2. The ranking of a background is determined by the different of likes vs. dislikes. For example, if a background has 4 likes and 3 dislikes, it has 1 point.
  • 3. When the winner is announced, he or she should be given a message telling him or her that he or she has won. The message should also feature the background that has won.

Of course, we can adjust as needed. — AMK152 (Wall • Contrib) 00:55, June 28, 2015 (UTC)

AMK's rules are good. Jersey The Taco M C  15:19, July 6, 2015 (UTC)

I agree with a lot of the rules written by 120d but this is how i would go about with the rules obviously taking into acount of the pros and cons. I did use some of 120d rules as some of them are really valid and useful.

1. SpongeBob only images are allowed. All others will be deleted and failure to do so may result in warnings.

2. Most be appropriately related to the prompt.

3. You may not use images from last year unless you had recieved approval from a contest referee or Admin/Beaucrat. Same applies for the summer contest.

4. All backgrounds must be age appropraite.

5. You may not vote on your own background otherwise you will be disqualified.

6. You may not post last years winners background or winners before that. No exceptions. Same applies for the summer contest no matter what position it was in.

7. You can submitt as many as you want. But you cannot submitt after the deadline given.

8. Avoid swearing or bullying when voting your opinion. You may be blocked.

9. Winning isn't everything. Don't hate just becuase they will win. It's how you play. See above for more.

10. You must ask a Admin or Beaurcrat to start a contest with a good valid prompt and reason. If you don't it will be deleted.

11. Backgrounds are voted by Points and not percentage like disscussion are. It can be easy to mix the 2.

12. You must follow the format of the contest or warnigs may be given out.

13. Do not vandalize the pages.

14. When a contest is over the winner will recieve a message saying they should upload it. If they can't they should consult an Admin or Beaucrat. Also the winner should be displayed on the contest page and the page should be locked forever. (Unless it's urgent and it needs editing)

15. Halfway through points should be displayed on a table and edited each time you visit. This helps users understand who may win to prevent confusion.

16. Referees should make sure these are enforced so contests are safe and fun.

17. If a background is a tie then another round should be postedo on a seperate page. Do not end the contest or edit the page. Instead create a new one.

18. For backgrounds like logos and designs should have a list of guidelines for the contest so people are on the same level.

19. Do not post duplicate (Post the same image) backgrouds or it will be deleted. Doing this again and again (Especially on purpose) may result in a block.

20. If you make another background make sure to put [#1] or [#2] each time. So we know how many backgrounds you have uploaded.

21. Do not cheat. Cheating can result in a block.

22. Do not forge the results (Changing the points to look like you got more than this user) or you may be blocked.

23. All contests should have a start and end date. If not the contest will be deleted.

24. All contests should have a introduction telling them what the contest is about.

25. Anything important must be highlighted. (This rule isn't as important but its more reccomended)

Some of it comes from 120d rules but most of it is my general idea. This is not rewriting the whole rules but it's more rewording/rephrasing and adding some new ones or changing some.  Another pointless comment given out by User:IRmjii 21:10, July 10, 2015 (UTC)

JCM

I've rewritten AMK/120d's rules to account for non-background contests and allow for more flexibility.

  • A. General
  • 1. Contests can be used to choose backgrounds, logos, or anything else requiring user submissions and votes.
  • 2. Only administrators can open or close contests. Users who are not administrators must ask an admin before they create a contest.
  • 3. Contests generally should have at least a two week voting period, but if there's a clear winner before that voting period is up, it can end earlier.
  • B. Background contests
  • 1. Every decision about the current background of the wiki is determined by the outcome of background contests.
  • 2. All backgrounds must relate to SpongeBob or they will be removed.
  • 3. If you submit a background that won the previous year, it will be removed. You are allowed to submit backgrounds that did not win the previous year.
  • a. For Summer background contests, this rule does not apply. However, if a background from the previous year has placed in the same position as in the previous year, then it will be disqualified and the next position will be the winner of that placement.
  • You can make your own background or add an image from the internet. While there's no size requirement, bigger is usually better.
  • C. Deciding a winner
  • 1. At the beginning of the final week, the current standings should be added in a table. It should be removed when the winner is announced.
  • 2. The ranking of a submission is determined by the different of likes vs. dislikes. For example, if a submission has 4 likes and 3 dislikes, it has 1 point.
  • 3. When the winners are announced, it's common courtesy to give each of them a message telling them that they won.

AMK152 #2

Okay, I took JCM's latest as well as points made by IRmjii and modified them to this:

  • A. General
  • 1. Contests can be used to choose backgrounds, logos, or anything else requiring user submissions and votes.
  • 2. Only administrators can open or close contests. Users who are not administrators must ask an administrator before they create a contest.
  • 3. Contests generally should have at least a two week voting period, but this rule is not set in stone and contest lengths can be flexible.
  • B. Background contests
  • 1. Every decision about the current background of the wiki is determined by the outcome of background contests.
  • 2. You are allowed to submit multiple backgrounds.
  • 4. All backgrounds must relate to SpongeBob or they will be removed.
  • 6. You can make your own background or add an image from the internet. While there's no size requirement, bigger is usually better.
  • 7. When making an entry, you should use the correct format. This format should be provided on the contest page.
  • C. Decision process
  • 1. At the beginning of the final week, the current standings should be added in a table. It should be removed when the winner is announced.
  • 2. The ranking of a submission is determined by the difference of likes vs. dislikes. For example, if a submission has 4 likes and 3 dislikes, it has 1 point.
  • 3. Tiebreakers will be determined by another contest page with the finalists, usually shortly before the background is set to go up.
  • 4. When the winners are announced, it's common courtesy to give each of them a message telling them that they won.

Let me know what you think. — AMK152 (Wall • Contrib) 21:10, July 27, 2015 (UTC)
