This page provides the details into the layout and formatting used in the SpongeBob SquarePants character articles.

General

This section outlines general guidelines for the character articles.

Naming scheme

Patrick Star will be used as an example page name:

  • Character article
  • Patrick Star
  • Character appearances
  • Patrick Star/appearances
  • Character galleries
  • Patrick Star/gallery

General article policies

  • 1. Any character whose name has been been official and confirmed by an acceptable source (excluding TV guide listings) may have their own article.
  • 2. All character articles must have the source of the name listed within the article and at a master name source page at ESB:Project Characters. Sources for "incidental" characters should also be listed on that page.
  • 3. Any character whose names not yet been revealed will have the Category:Unnamed characters category. The names for those characters should be descriptive of their appearance, and Template:Unofficial name should be transcluded onto the page above the infobox.
  • 4. All characters will have the Category:Characters category, which will be generated from the infobox.

Character appearances policies

  • 1. All characters with less than 10 appearances will not have their own appearance subpage. Instead, their appearances will be listed in a table on their main biography article. Characters with 10 appearances or more can have their own appearances subpage.
  • 2. All characters will have a table that lists their appearances, in production order. Each table will list the episode name and what the character did in that episode, no matter how big or small.
  • 3. All characters will have an appearance table as follows, the example taken from Fred/appearances.

The Appear3 template consists of the frame where the character appeared, followed by the episode name, followed by anything the character did in the episode, no matter how minor. If we're counting on the Appear1 template, that would be the same but without the frame. In cases in which the character plays a prominent roll, there is no need to describe the entire thing, but just give a brief description. For example, in the case of Squidward's appearance list for "Band Geeks," do not describe all his roles in the episode. Use a general description of his role(s) in the episode: "He organizes a marching band to impress Squilliam." Using the example without the images is possible, but using the example with the images is highly recommended.

For characters that appear in multiple series, the appearance pages should be ordered by the character's first appearance in each show.

Character names

  • 1. All characters must have an exact source as to their actual names right on their articles.
  • 2. All characters with names must be listed at ESB:Character names with their names and episode sources.
  • 3. ESB will use only character names that are used exactly as they are mentioned. (example: Fred is Fred, not Frederick, Fredrick, Alfred, etc., as only "Fred" has been officially confirmed.)
  • 4. For any background character whose name has not been officially confirmed by an acceptable source, the character should be named by their incidental number. The name of the character must be obtained from an incidental model sheet, and an image of the sheet must be referenced in the lead section of the page. For background characters whose incidental number is unknown, the article should be named in line with 3. in the general article policies section.
  • 5. Incidental-type characters with only one given name in the series should have their article named after it. If there is more than one given name, the most consistent given name can be the article name. Otherwise, the model name takes precedent.

Infobox

  • 1. Limit the connections to just primary relationships, instead of listing every small friendship and temporary employment, among others.
  • 2. Infoboxes should only contain as many different images in tabbers as is necessary to show significant differences in a character's appearance, design or colors between episodes. Images that do not show a significant difference should go in the gallery, not the infobox.

Layout of sections

  • 1. All character articles will follow a uniform order of sections and subsection.
  • 2. Minor characters do not need so many subsections, and should use the second layout shown.
  • 3. If there is no information for a particular section, that section can be eliminated.
  • 4. Each character article will be broken down into the following sections and subsections:
==Character==
This is for main and major characters (not background characters). Here, we will describe the character's relevance to the series,
how the character was developed, any production details of the character, and the portrayer.
This can include describing the animation of the character over the seasons.

==Biography==
Under this section is the character's biography. This is mostly fact-based, such as
their history, their family, their friends, their occupation, and their hobbies.
Minor character do not necessarily need to have this section broken down.

===Early life===
Describe their early life, if any. Mr. Krabs is probably the character who may have the most amount of background information.

===Career===
Describe their jobs, career, life goals, etc.

===Personal life===
Describe their personal life. This can be their hobbies, their relationships with family and friends, etc.

==Personality==
This section describes the character's personality, such has appearance (how they look/dress),
their likes, dislikes, fears, opinions, skills, weaknesses, etc.

==References==
{{Reflist}}

==External links==
This is for any relevant external links.

For minor and background characters which do not have as much information as the main or recurring characters, the following layout should be used:

The lead section should briefly introduce the character, and provide a reference to the name
of the incidental if available.

==Names==
For incidentals who have been given names that vary between episodes, all names given to
them should be listed here alongside the episode where they are given that name.

==Description==
This should describe the character as they normally appear, and should signify any notable
anomalies.

==Role in series==
This should provide a general description of how the character is portrayed in the series,
and how it differs between episodes. For characters with few or only one appearance, this
section could simply describe the specific actions of the character. For characters with
many appearances, it should not list all of their actions.

==Major roles==
This should list any and all times that the character has played a major role in an episode.
This section should be omitted for single-appearance characters and characters who play no
major roles. Minor roles for characters who make many appearances should be placed in the
appearances table, either on a subpage (if more than 10 appearances) or otherwise under this
section, but above the trivia.

==Trivia==
Any notable trivia related to the character should be listed here.

==References==
{{Reflist}}

==External links==
This is for any relevant external links.

ChList

1. Create page Template:ChList/<character> with only this on it:

{{ChList
|name = <!-- name of the character without square brackets -->
|shortdesc = <!-- briefly describe the character -->
|image = <!-- picture of the character; file name only -->
|desc = <!-- full biography* -->
}}
*Fill it with all text from the actual character article, but modify the text to make it fit the list better. Also, if the article contains Template:Character, just ignore it.

2. Import it to the list of characters by using this: {{ChList/<character>}}

Article

1. Use this box to generate the section name for the character, but read the second step first:

<createbox>

preload=none prefix=Template:ChList# default=CHARACTER buttonlabel=Generate

</createbox>

2. Link should change to something like this below. Copy the bolded part:

  • http://spongebob.wikia.com/wiki/Template:ChList?action=create&preload=none&editintro=&section=#Angry_Jack

3. Replace content of the character article with this:

  • #REDIRECT [[<list-of-characters>#<paste-it-here>]]
4. Remove all categories from the article and protect the article: "Administrators only"

Notes

  • All characters, except those on the "Main" tab, should be sorted alphabetically.
  • Once ChList templates are absolutely perfect they should be protected, so that only administrators can change them.
