Synopsis
  +
The episode begins at the Krusty Krab, with Mr. Krabs getting a notice from the Fry Cook Union that since SpongeBob has accumulated too much vacation time, he needs to take a vacation. If this policy is not followed, he will have to pay a fine. SpongeBob goes home quickly afterwards, but the next day, he goes back to the Krusty Krab again. He thought it was just for going home early. Mr. Krabs reminds SpongeBob that he's on vacation meaning SpongeBob cannot work during the vacation time, and also gets Patrick to be SpongeBob's replacement fry cook for the time being.
At the Krusty Krab, Mr. Krabs receives a notice from the fry cooks' union saying that SpongeBob has worked too much without any vacation break and that if SpongeBob doesn't take a vacation, he will have to pay a fine. So he sends SpongeBob on a vacation. SpongeBob goes home, goes to bed, eats breakfast the next morning, flosses his teeth, showers, sprays deodorant, and makes himself sparkle, and lift weights as part of his "vacation." He comes back to the Krusty Krab where Mr. Krabs kicks him out because that wasn't really a vacation. SpongeBob then asks what a vacation is and is horrified when he learns it means he's not allowed to work. He panics and Mr. Krabs tells him that Patrick will be his "unpaid replacement." He realizes that he shouldn't remind himself of the Krusty Krab and that he is very hungry. So, SpongeBob goes back to the Krusty Krab. This time, it's not to work, but to buy some food. Patrick is seen cooking the Krabby Patties incorrectly by putting them on his belly and not having the exact temperature. SpongeBob shows him how to do it correctly, but he is caught and is kicked out. To remind SpongeBob of the Krusty Krab, he plays with his Krusty Krab playset where he moves models of him, Squidward, and Mr. Krabs. SpongeBob pretends that the Mr. Krabs model kicks him out. The model of SpongeBob goes to his miniature pineapple and plays the same game. To relax, SpongeBob goes to Jellyfish Fields to jellyfish, however he sees reminders of the Krusty Krab. Now SpongeBob tries a series of attempts to get back in the Krusty Krab. Every time he tries, Mr. Krabs catches him. Finally, Mr. Krabs drives SpongeBob to a forest where he commands him to fetch the spatula, and then drives away, leaving him alone. SpongeBob fetches it and starts to think that this is a permanent vacation. Blaming Patrick for trying to take away his job, he walks to Patrick's rock. When Patrick gets there, the rock automatically opens and he finds SpongeBob, who is seemingly going out of his mind. Patrick backs away, becoming extremely nervous at his friend's behavior. We then see the Krusty Krab where SpongeBob is frying the Krabby Patties in a Patrick costume. Mr. Krabs notices and announces that SpongeBob's vacation is officially over and that he doesn't have to pay a fine. SpongeBob explains that he left Patrick at home watching TV, which was really static, and happily returns to his job as a fry cook.

  +
  +
SpongeBob is tired of being at home, so he decides to go to the Krusty Krab as a customer. Mr. Krabs accepts this, but when he sees SpongeBob trying to help Patrick, he kicks him out again. SpongeBob still misses the Krusty Krab, so he tries several more attempts at getting to the Krusty Krab, such as coming out of a toilet and pretending to be a delivery man, only to fail each time.
  +
  +
Eventually, Mr. Krabs gets tired of this, so he sends SpongeBob to the middle of a forest. He thinks Mr. Krabs is trying to replace him permanently, so he goes into Patrick's house to scare him out of being a fry cook. At the Krusty Krab, Mr. Krabs thinks Patrick is cooking Krabby Patties at rapid speed, but sees it is actually SpongeBob in a Patrick outfit. As it turns out, SpongeBob has used up his vacation time, so he continues working at the Krusty Krab as the episode ends.

*The April 21st, 2013 airing was paired with "20,000 Patties Under the Sea." This was for the Spongecation Sunday marathon, As the episodes are both travel-themed.

*When SpongeBob is on a "vacation," he sings like he sang "I'm ready, promotion" in The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie.
*This episode was originally going to be called "Bummer Summer," but the name was changed to "Bummer Vacation," likely because SpongeBob was taking a vacation from work, not boating school.

  +
*When SpongeBob is backing away from the Krusty Krab, a different sound is used instead of SpongeBob's squeaky shoes.
*"Chimps Ahoy" aired with this episode when it premiered.

*The part where SpongeBob says, "I've been waiting for you, Patrick!" has become popular on YouTube.
*This was Dani Michaeli's first episode as a writer.
+
*This is the first episode for a few things:
*In this episode, SpongeBob says that he gets less than a nickel a year, but in "Squeaky Boots," he gets 5 dollars a month. The statement can be reinforced in the episode "Money Talks" where SpongeBob said that Krabs is five dollars short on payday and Krabs would be cheap enough to refuse paying.

  +
**The first episode since "Hooky" in season 1 to use "Sunny Samoa" as the title card music.
*While playing with the Krusty Krab Playset, SpongeBob plays Squidward smiling, even though Squidward always frowns at work, but only for SpongeBob's liking. Maybe the figure's facial expressions were changed to a smile.

  +
**Dani Michaeli's first episode as a writer. He left the show after season 8, but returned briefly in season 10 as a guest writer.
*When SpongeBob is on a "vacation," he sings like he did in "The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie."

  +
**The first episode where "Nautical Hijinx" plays.
*In the part where Mr. Krabs brings SpongeBob into the woods, the way it is done has an "Artificial Intelligence (2001 film)" theme, when the mother throws the robot child into the woods.

  +
**Robertryan Cory's first episode where he isn't a prop designer.
*This is the second time Patrick is shown with ears, and the first time he noticed he had any. The first time was in "Survival of the Idiots," where Patrick said "Who you callin' a pinhead?" The third was in the ending of "No Nose Knows." The fourth was in "A Friendly Game."

  +
*This is the second episode for two things:
*The scene where SpongeBob advances towards Patrick mentally and the scene cuts to black was quite infamous for scaring younger viewers because they might think SpongeBob is going to kill Patrick.

  +
**The second episode where Patrick is shown as a Krusty Krab employee. The first is "Big Pink Loser."
**Even in Indonesia, this episode only cut until that scene, likely due to possible time constraint much like other episodes as it was cut with ads during it's airing. But it's possible that scene where SpongeBob disguised as Patrick seemed too gruesome, as it seemingly shown SpongeBob had Patrick skinned alive and uses his skin for his disguise.

**The second episode where Patrick is shown with ears, and the first one where he notices he had any. The first is "Survival of the Idiots," where Patrick says, "Who you callin' pinhead?"
*When Patrick was cooking the patties wrong, SpongeBob said that Krabby Patties must be cooked at exactly 298 degrees, but in "Someone's in the Kitchen with Sandy," he said that Krabby Patties must be cooked at exactly 274 degrees.

  +
*This is the last episode for two things:
*The facial expressions of toy figures of SpongeBob and Mr. Krabs in the Krusty Krab playset are similar to the faces of the characters in "Thomas the Tank Engine & Friends" until that show changed into CGI.

  +
**The last episode to play "So Tired" until "ChefBob."
*SpongeBob: "I happily acquiesce." Some viewers might be confused on what the word "acquiesce" means. It means to accept something reluctantly but without protest.

  +
**The last episode to premiere during the Nick Friday Night event.
*In Greek version this episode is called Ατυχείς Διακοπές which means Unlucky Vacations.

  +
*In Comics No. 5, there is a comic strip titled "Day Off/Off Day" which has the exact same plot, except Patrick doesn't replace SpongeBob.
*In Polish version this episode called Koszmar na wakacje which means Nightmare for Vacation.

*The part where SpongeBob says, "I've been waiting for you, Patrick!" has been popular on YouTube. Someone even made SpongeBob in G-Major acting demonic after he said, "I've been waiting for you, Patrick!"

*Despite Patrick's stupidity and SpongeBob's offer to teach him, Mr. Krabs denied because he thought it would be a work fine. However, in "Big Pink Loser," he did a horrible job for his stupidity, it might be possible that this happened before this episode, or Mr. Krabs did not notice.

*This was the first episode aired on Nick Germany. Past episodes aired on Super RTL due to Nickelodeon closing in Germany from 1998-2005.

  +
*While pretending to be a steaming, hot bun delivery man, SpongeBob drives a truck even though he doesn't have a license and doesn't know how to drive a boatmobile in other episodes.
  +
*When Mr. Krabs is driving and says, "Uh-huh," his eyes are white instead of pale green.
  +
*When SpongeBob glares at the spatula and acts like a dog, one of SpongeBob's corneas are colored blue instead of black for a split second.
  +
*When Patrick is running home and singing, he is coming from the left side of his rock, but in the previous scene, the left side leads towards the woods where Mr. Krabs got rid of SpongeBob.
  +
*When Mr. Krabs shows the coin to SpongeBob, the wall behind SpongeBob turns pink-blue, as in the hall, instead of a shade of gray.

"Bummer Vacation" is a SpongeBob SquarePants episode from season 4. In this episode, Mr. Krabs forces SpongeBob to take vacation time off work.

Characters

Synopsis

Trivia

General

  • This episode's alternate titles were "Bummer Summer," "Bummer Summer Vacation," "Homework,"[3] and "Obligation Vacation."[4]
  • This episode was paired up with a rerun of "Ghost Host" during the original American airing.[5]
  • When SpongeBob is on a "vacation," he sings like he sang "I'm ready, promotion" in The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie.
  • When SpongeBob is backing away from the Krusty Krab, a different sound is used instead of SpongeBob's squeaky shoes.
  • The part where SpongeBob says, "I've been waiting for you, Patrick!" has become popular on YouTube.
  • This is the first episode for a few things:
  • This is the second episode for two things:
    • The second episode where Patrick is shown as a Krusty Krab employee. The first is "Big Pink Loser."
    • The second episode where Patrick is shown with ears, and the first one where he notices he had any. The first is "Survival of the Idiots," where Patrick says, "Who you callin' pinhead?"
  • This is the last episode for two things:
  • In SpongeBob Comics No. 5, there is a comic strip titled "Day Off/Off Day" which has the exact same plot, except Patrick doesn't replace SpongeBob.

Cultural references

  • This episode's title references summer vacation.
  • The magazine Squidward is reading is called Squid Ink. This is a parody of the 1991 magazine Teen Ink.

Errors

  • When SpongeBob returns home and surprises Gary, he says, "Well, good night, Gary," even though it is daytime outside.
  • SpongeBob seems to be wearing his pants while he is in the shower.
  • When Patrick is looking at the reflection of himself in SpongeBob's spatula, his reflection has pink eyelids instead of their correct purple.
  • The grill is on the back wall instead of being in the front of the kitchen right below the ordering window.
  • When SpongeBob gasps at Patrick when he sees Patrick cooking Krabby Patties at the wrong temperature, the window of the Krusty Krab is way bigger than normal.
  • When SpongeBob turns the grill temperature to 298 degrees Fahrenheit, the patties on the grill had disappeared from the shot before.
  • SpongeBob's eyelashes are missing as he starts playing with his official Krusty Krab playset.
  • When SpongeBob admits it is unhealthy to think about the Krusty Krab while on vacation and he needs to get out of the house, his legs are missing.
    • In the same scene, SpongeBob's mouth disappears for a frame.
  • When Mr. Krabs tells SpongeBob to back away from the Krusty Krab, the Chum Bucket and its path are missing.
  • While pretending to be a steaming, hot bun delivery man, SpongeBob drives a truck even though he doesn't have a license and doesn't know how to drive a boatmobile in other episodes.
  • When Mr. Krabs is driving and says, "Uh-huh," his eyes are white instead of pale green.
  • When SpongeBob glares at the spatula and acts like a dog, one of SpongeBob's corneas are colored blue instead of black for a split second.
  • When Patrick is running home and singing, he is coming from the left side of his rock, but in the previous scene, the left side leads towards the woods where Mr. Krabs got rid of SpongeBob.
  • When Mr. Krabs shows the coin to SpongeBob, the wall behind SpongeBob turns pink-blue, as in the hall, instead of a shade of gray.
