Synopsis
Synopsis
  +
The episode starts at SpongeBob's house, where he is feeding Gary. Afterward, he has to leave for work, but Gary wants to go for a walk. SpongeBob tells him that he does not have time to give him one and sadly walks away to work, feeling remorseful that he had no time to hang out with Gary. As he goes to the Krusty Krab, he notices that Mr. Krabs refuses to give one customer service on account of him bringing his pet worm into the restaurant. This reminds SpongeBob of the fact that Gary is home alone with nobody to keep him company, prompting him to make a remorseful phone call reminding Gary that he will arrive home soon.
It starts with SpongeBob feeding Gary. He accidentally drops the food and chaos comes. Then, SpongeBob goes to work. Gary tries to come with him but SpongeBob cannot bring pets to work and leaves Gary. Gary then turns on the TV, uses his leash as a lasso to grab a cowboy hat in a cupboard, and watches a cowboy show or movie.

At the Krusty Krab, a customer comes in with his pet worm. SpongeBob explains that people cannot bring their pets. The man is just about to leave when Mr. Krabs came and told him to buy Krabby Patties. He says to the man that he is a responsible pet owner. Then, SpongeBob feels guilty for leaving Gary alone after what Mr. Krabs says, and decides to call Gary. Gary is too busy watching TV to answer the phone. SpongeBob thinks he is too sad to answer. SpongeBob then listens to the message on the answering machine. It is a message that SpongeBob and Gary made that talks about SpongeBob and Gary having fun, this makes SpongeBob feel even guiltier. He then leaves a message saying that he knows that Gary is feeling lonely and that he will be home soon. While this is happening, Gary is watching TV and having a good time.

  +
As SpongeBob gets off work at night, Mr. Krabs tells him that he needs help with loading coal out of the parking lot, but SpongeBob cannot help as he has to get back to Gary at home. Mr. Krabs lets him off the hook so long as he comes in work five hours earlier the following day to help with the parking lot. As SpongeBob is walking home, he notices a truck selling Puffy Fluffs, which catch his attention due to their "cute" appearance. However, the lady selling them informs him of their danger (they are extremely vicious and hostile toward other pets, especially snails), but SpongeBob does not pay attention and simply runs off with a green Puffy Fluff without paying for it, the lady commenting aside that nobody listens to her.

  +
SpongeBob comes home and shows Gary his new playmate while he is at work; he names it "Puffy Fluffy," and places them next to one another to have them get along as he makes an enchiladas meal. Anytime SpongeBob is not present, Puffy makes blatant threats to Gary, but SpongeBob fails to notice Puffy Fluffy's impending danger and instead accuses Gary of perpetrating violence against him or ignoring him. As punishment, Gary is put to sleep early tonight, next to Puffy Fluffy, then SpongeBob himself goes upstairs to sleep, berating Gary again when he disturbs him. Over the night, Puffy continues to threaten Gary as if he is going to kill him. Gary tries many defense mechanisms, but it turns out that Puffy Fluffy is stronger than him, making Gary more vulnerable to his abuse. They continue fighting throughout the night which eventually carries into the library, causing a house fire made by Puffy Fluffy, who knocked over SpongeBob's fireplace, and SpongeBob does not wake up once, since he slept peacefully and dreamed that he was in his grandmother's house. Gary was able to put it out.
SpongeBob flips the "open" sign to "closed". He sneaks out of the Krusty Krab hoping not to be noticed so he can just go home without doing any more work. However, this is stopped when Mr. Krabs notices him closing the door to the Krusty Krab. Mr. Krabs is seen covered in tar and holding a shovel. He is next to a tar maker about to retar the parking lot. He asks SpongeBob to join him and SpongeBob declines. Mr. Krabs understands and tells him to come to work 5 hours early to finish the parking lot.

Later, on his way home, he spots a stand with Nudibranchs. SpongeBob sees a green one with purple eyes, huge pink lips and blue fins. He says he wants that one, but an old peddler woman (she owns the Nudibranchs) warns him that looks can be deceiving because the Nudibranchs are violent and dangerous, especially around other animals. SpongeBob ignores her warning and takes it home anyway while the old peddler woman says to herself that the people never listen.

  +
The next day, SpongeBob wakes up to find that his house is a mess and assumes that Gary caused it out of jealousy of his new "friend." He then walks into his exercise room to find Puffy Fluffy about to eat Gary alive, but, oblivious to Puffy Fluffy's blatant abuse, once again accuses Gary of harassing him. Puffy eventually traps SpongeBob as well, which gives Gary the idea to save him by getting out his lasso and freeing SpongeBob, and intimidating Puffy, who runs off after Gary presents his defense. Despite this, SpongeBob still believes that Gary was responsible for Puffy Fluffy's violent behavior.

  +
The episode ends with SpongeBob at work again, this time bringing Gary after the policy has been updated to allow animals in the restaurant, so he won't be lonely anymore to his dismay. Mr. Krabs hires Gary as the restaurant's second fry cook, as the episode ends.
When he gets home, Gary is still watching TV. SpongeBob gets in front of the screen to show Gary his new friend, which he named "Puffy Fluffy", then leaves to make enchiladas. While in the kitchen, Gary is chewing his toy in front of Puffy. Puffy then growls and scares Gary to go behind the couch while Puffy chews his toy apart. Puffy, about to bite Gary, sees that SpongeBob is coming back and turns himself back to a nice Nudibranch. SpongeBob gets Gary's bowl and makes a slash on it with marker. On the other side of the slash, he writes "Puffy Fluffy". Gary starts to eat when Puffy Fluffy Growls at him again. Then Puffy eat every single piece of food in the bowl. SpongeBob sees that Gary is hiding from Puffy again. Gary then jumps on SpongeBob while Puffy looks like he has absolutely no idea why Gary is on SpongeBob. SpongeBob tells Gary he is going to sleep with Puffy Fluffy tonight. When he puts Gary in the bed, he hisses at Puffy.

During the night, Gary wakes up and sees Puffy's skin on the bed. He walks in the kitchen to see a huge eel eating in the refrigerator. The eel is revealed to be Puffy Fluffy. He now has five tongues with a mouth on each. Puffy then attacks Gary and SpongeBob does not wake up.

In the morning, SpongeBob wakes up and discover the situation and find out that Gary was about to be eaten. Gary is relieved when SpongeBob enters the kitchen, only to be shocked when instead of helping him his owner starts to scold him for his destruction and how he's still treating Puffy Fluffy, even when the eel is clearly about to eat him. SpongeBob continues to lecture Gary and then Puffy Fluffy's tongues grabs onto SpongeBob, who's still scolding his snail even as he's about to be eaten. It is up to Gary to save his master. Using a leash, he whips at Puffy Fluffy, driving it away from SpongeBob's Pineapple home. SpongeBob chases after the beast crying for it not to go, then turning and admonishing Gary for chasing Puffy Fluffy away, to which he gets a ruthless glare.

This episode is on the Heroes of Bikini Bottom and The Complete 7th Season DVDs.

Reception
*This episode is one of the series worst received episodes by fans and critics alike, mainly due to SpongeBob being incredibly out of character, committing a crime, and saying that Gary was hurting Puffy Fluffy and also said that Puffy Fluffy will eat SpongeBob for good, while it was clearly the complete opposite.

*This is the lowest ranked episode on SpongeBuddy Mania with a 1.2/10.

Trivia
Trivia
  +
General
*The theme of getting a pet from a mysterious old person that is potentially dangerous having a cute creature become a monster, and a good pet destroying the monster parodies 'Gremlins'. Only more so as SpongeBob blatantly ignores the peddler's words of caution and just breaks into her caravan and takes one without permission.

  +
*The title card background is similar to those of "Hall Monitor" and "Culture Shock." The only difference is that the title card for the latter is a lighter shade of red and is slightly zoomed in.
*This is the second episode where Gary wears a Krusty Krab hat. The first was Banned in Bikini Bottom. The third time was One Coarse Meal. The fourth was Shellback Shenanigans.

  +
**It is also similar to the one for "SquarePants vs. The Big One," only that the title card is blue and not red.
*Nudibranchs, also known as Sea Slugs, are worm-like creatures, but in this episode portrays them as plump, fluffy fish.

  +
*SpongeBob mentions Mr. Krabs' hatred of pets in the restaurant again in "The Cent of Money" and "Shellback Shenanigans."
*Puffy Fluffy tries to eat SpongeBob, which is appropriate, since nudibranchs eat sponges.

  +
**Coincidentally, all three are season 7 episodes.
*The scene where Puffy Fluffy's monstrous form attacks can be scary for younger and/or sensitive viewers.

  +
*This episode features a phone in SpongeBob's house that is not a shellphone. This phone was previously seen in "Procrastination."
*Despite SpongeBob's behavior towards Gary and stealing Puffy Fluffy, he never was punished for his actions, even though he should have.

  +
*Incidental 41 is seen as a sheriff in the western crime movie or TV show that Gary is watching.
*This episode has a phone that is not a "shell phone".

  +
*Gary wears a soda-drinking hat while watching TV. A soda drinking hat was previously seen as the main plot point of the episode "One Krabs Trash."
  +
*Puffy Fluffy's species is never referred to by name in this episode. It is instead known from the model sheets.
  +
*It's revealed that Gary's full first name is Garold.
  +

  +
*SpongeBob didn't have to get Gary a partner because he already has another pet, Shelley. She even appears during this episode, when SpongeBob is sleeping in his bedroom and the ceiling cracks are falling off.
  +
*This episode reveals that SpongeBob's garage is located behind the living room.
  +
*When Puffy Fluffy in his monstrous form is inside of the exercise room, SpongeBob comes in and mistakenly thinks that Puffy Fluffy is the one being held hostage by Gary when it's obviously the other way around.
  +
*This episode pairing is the first in season 7 where Patrick is absent in both segments.
  +
*This is the first season 7 episode to feature the Krusty Krab without Squidward.
  +
*This is the second episode where SpongeBob says, "Gary, shame on you!" The first was "Fungus Among Us."

*This is the second episode where Gary wears a Krusty Krab employee hat. The first was "Banned in Bikini Bottom."
  +
*This is the second episode where Gary is seen inside of the Krusty Krab kitchen. The first was "Suds."
  +
*There is an online game based on this episode called Gary's Revenge.
  +
*This episode was paired up with "Don't Look Now" during the Massive Monster Mayhem Marathon.

Dub facts
  +
*In the Polish dub, SpongeBob tells Puffy Fluffy to put Gary down instead of the other way around.
*It appears there was Indiana Jones-like music when SpongeBob was about to break down the door.

Cultural references
*This episode's plot is a parody of the 1984 horror comedy film Gremlins and its 1990 sequel Gremlins 2: The New Batch.

*The container for the chips that Gary eats is similar to the Pringles cans.
  +
**The container appears again in the The Patrick Star Show episode "Gas Station Vacation" as one of the many items Squidina grabs at Gas Land.

Errors
Errors
  +

*Mr. Krabs told SpongeBob to come in five hours early at work so he should have woken up at 4 a.m. instead of 9 a.m.

  +
*When SpongeBob is walking away from his house near the start of the episode, his belt turns white for a split second.
*SpongeBob's pants were ruined; however, when got to the Krusty Krab, he wore his pants. It could be possible that he bought one or picked out another before going to work, considering he has a multiple amount of the same pants.

"A Pal for Gary" is a SpongeBob SquarePants episode from season 7. In this episode, SpongeBob gets another pet to keep Gary company while he isn't home, which proves to be disastrous.

Characters

Synopsis

SpongeBob finding the perfect "pet" for Gary, unaware of its danger.

"You put Fluffy down right now!"

The episode ends with SpongeBob at work again, this time bringing Gary after the policy has been updated to allow animals in the restaurant, so he won't be lonely anymore to his dismay. Mr. Krabs hires Gary as the restaurant's second fry cook, as the episode ends.
