2005 (MMV) was a common year of the Gregorian calendar that started on a Saturday. No new episodes aired until May 6 due to the production of the first movie slowing down the production of the main series. After "Good Neighbors" premiered on May 20, the show went on hiatus over the summer of 2005 with no new episodes aired until "Selling Out," which aired on September 23.

2005 was the first year of SpongeBob's revival, whereas the show was originally supposed to be cancelled after the movie that was originally released in late 2004 in the US, but 2005 in the UK and Australia.

This was also the year when the second incarnation of Viacom was founded after the split of the original incarnation.

The next time that one year would air less episodes would be 2013.
