Year 2000 (MM) was a leap year of the Gregorian calendar that started on a Saturday. It was a century leap year. After "Hooky" and "Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy II" premiered on April 8, 2000, no new episodes aired until October. This also happened in 2004. This will be the second and last time there were episodes in December until 2012, when "It's a SpongeBob Christmas!" premiered.

Stricly speaking, 2000 was the 1000th and last year of the 2nd millennium, the 100th and last year of the 20th century and the 1st year of the 2000s decade. In popular terms and common usage however, the year 2000 is the 1st year of the 3rd millennium, the 1st year of the 21st century, and the 1st year of the 2000s decade.
