Controversy

The disputed show allegedly contains violent scenes
~ John Laskaridis on Newspaper "Ethnos"

Channel Nine airings (2007)

During airings of the series on Channel Nine, ESR (The National Council for Radio and Television) started thinking that the show has controversial scenes with violence and sex and that SpongeBob is transexual, as he passes most of the time with Patrick.[4]

Ellinofreneia (early series) Parody

Ελληνοφρένεια_-_Μπομπ_Σφουγγαράκης

Ελληνοφρένεια - Μπομπ Σφουγγαράκης

During the run of the Ellinofreneia early TV series on the Greek channel SKAI, a talk of the Greek politician George Alogoskoufis was satirized with an actor's hands, holding a SpongeBob and Patrick plush. The actor was moving SpongeBob and Patrick, with a censored way.
Later, a child's mother did a report about the censored scene at the radio series of the same name, because her child was watching that. The radio series hoster tried to say that ESR has claimed that the series is for adults (as it has also claimed that it has violence and sexual references).

Banned from Nickelodeon Greece episodes

The episodes "Dumped," "Krab Borg," "Rock-a-Bye Bivalve," "Ghoul Fools," and others are now banned from Nickelodeon Greece, because ESR thinks that they have violence/sexual references and getting reports from parents. May those episodes had previously aired on Nickelodeon Greece (for example, "Ghoul Fouls" which was aired only in time of 10:00 PM).

KKE response to Alexis Tsipras[5]

In a speech of Alexis Tsipras, chairman of SYRIZA (Bloc of Racical Left) and current prime minister of Greece, in 20!3, about the signal of the new station/company that was about to completely replace the Hellenic Broadcasting Corporation, called NERIT (New Hellenic Radio, Internet and Television), he told that "You illegally emitted from a private studio a pirated signal that exposes the country internationally, with aesthetics referring to the Soviet Union channels of the 1970s and to Bolek and Lolek cartoons."

KKE (Communist Party of Greece) responded to the speech, saying:

But what do Bolek and Lolek have to do with that? You should know, and if you do not know it do it now, the Polish boys, Bolek and Lolek, are one of the best in children's entertainment. Cartoons far superior to any pedagogical point of view, displaying ideals and values particularly beneficial to young children who build their personality.
Motion-productive cartoons of the 1970s, yet so modern that for decades, they have entertained and enthused generations and generations of children with their adventures. And this is not accidental because they describe the everyday mischiefs and "adventures" of two little boys playing casually, without worries and woes. So should not they be young children like young children? And so were the children who lived in the countries of socialism, where in their own vocabulary and their parents' there was neither unemployment, nor poverty, nor insecurity and uncertainty.
PS. Does Mr. Tsipras prefer today's spirits of the modern capitalist animation industry that show competition, violence, "your death my life"? Does SpongeBob, who always serves his boss Mr. Krabs who oppresses him and exploits him, is his model?

Trivia

  • The series' first premiere ever was in Cyprus (Lumiere TV), in 2000, unlike Greece, where the show premiered three years later (TVCosmopolis). Thus, most episodes of the first 7 seasons of the show would premiere before, in Cyprus.
  • "Truth or Square" uses the normal intro audio.
  • The 2012 theme song was introduced on the Greece premiere of "Squidward's School for Grown-Ups."
  • The theme from the first movie alters the lyrics
  • Some episodes like "Best Day Ever," "Selling Out," and "Atlantis SquarePantis" use the English songs untranslated.
  • In the episodes "Your Shoe's Untied" and "Squid's Day Off," the original English names of the restaurants are used instead of the Greek ones.
  • In the episode "Krusty Krab Training Video," if one were to slow the speed of Plankton screaming (after talking with the same speed), they'll hear except the scream in the dubbed version, the scream in the English, original one.
  • Actors like Ντίνος Σούτης, Άλκης Ζερβός, Σπύρος Ζουπάνος and the dubbing cast of season 8-9 have took part in a variety of other Nicktoons/foreign series distributed by Nickelodeon Greece.
  • There's a cleaning service in Thessaloniki, Greece, that has its name given after the name of the show in Greek.
  • SpongeBob's last name in this dub is "Τετραγωνοπαντελονής", which can be heard before Painty laughs in the intro.
